Tri colored? I'm thinking that's why people don't want walker hounds, huh?
when I think coondawg, I'm thinking bluetick, redbone, or some mix.
What do those competition guys do with the hounds (or curs) that are good but older or good but not right for competing? Seems us "pleasure hunters" may be tickled with their cast offs.
Cheers M

They sell them on coondawgs.com for $1500 instead of $5000

Their are plenty top of the line walker hounds out there. Just as many as a bluetick or any type of cur. It is all a preference thing.

Oh, I was just refering to how far they go. I'm getting the impressions that walkers as a rule are rangier than some of the others whether just hunting or on track. I keep coming accross these "wanted" ads that say 'no walkers'. I was thinking that was on account of how far they go. Cheers M

Im not sure they hunt any farther out but I dont know alot about coon hunting. From the dogs I have seen keep in mind that is not alot but they hunt faster than a bluetick. As far as a redbone or plott not too many people hunt them around here. They are more of a show dog in the area I live in. I have a cousin that has been hunting blueticks for a long time and that is all he will hunt. He has a couple world champions but that has been many years ago.

I think alot depends on the type of woods your hunting and how many coons are there. I use to coon hunt quite a bit before I started hog hunting. I've actually used catahoulas to coon hunt. Produce more coons with them then the hounds. They were silent on track and by the time the coon new what was going on it was too late! They either had to fight or get up what they could for some relief. My hound huntin buddies didn't like it too much. To them it wasn't about the number of coons it was about the race and listening to the dogs. I was selling coons so it was more about the numbers to me and less work. Don't get me wrong I too enjoyed the races and listening to the dogs but a coon can and will travel a long ways. I don't think the gps tracking system would do much good coon hunting with hounds. The old long range tracking collars with a tree switch is more like it. I'll have to post some old pics with catahoula and coons. I sure produced more coons than hogs. I don't think I ever had a dry run while coon hunting.

Thre' my kinfolks up out of Winnfield worked hogs, coon hunted and squirrel hunted with their catahoulas. I'd give anything to have those dogs today. Last one I remember them having was probably in the mid 80's... I was in junior high and didn't know a thing about hog hunting with dogs.

Mike, I hear ya. There's not alot of those dogs left. People just don't spend the time with there dogs like the older folks did. My dad had a catahoula years and years ago that listened better than my kids. We used him to run deer with. When I was little everybody ran deer with dogs. After the hunt we would ride the roads with the catahoula in the back of the truck and catch those crazy skittish deer hounds mostly walkers with the catahoula. He would hit them and roll'em on there back and stand over them until we could get our hands on them and load them in the truck. We had chickens and when it was time to eat a few, you could point them out and he would hold them down with his feet. He wouldn't bother them until you told him to. Before I started hog hunting around 98 I used them to blood trail deer, coon hunt and work a few cows. I don't have anymore cows and don't bow hunt like I use to. The hog hunting has ruined me. LOL There are exceptions I just don't think most of the catahoulas today compare to the ones of yesterday. There use to be alot of good catahoulas up your kin folks way.

Mandy, I quoted this here too...hope you don't mind. Went coon huntin last night with underdog's kemmer cur and black devildog (patterdale terrier). Guys, we only think our bulldogs are tough. Patterdales are fearless and viscious if you are a furry mammal! No fear on coon that likely twice outweighed him, and hell on any furbearer in the woods. He had to be choked off because there was no breakstick! I had no idea something so small- think chihuahua crossed on jagd - could be so effective. The kemmer cur was a blast, but the real show was the "catch dog" patterdale. Sweet to people, and oh so portable. I decided striking and treeing the coon is easy, but finding the thing in the tree is hard! Like playing hide and seek with a guy in a ghillie suit. We got it done, bagged a coon, and were very pleased. Anyway, I wasn't brave enough to bring home a sow for culinary experementation, but may work up the nerve sometime.
Cheers and thanks underdog! M
Mandy, I can't beleive you ain't smokin that big ole coon right now I am glad y'all had fun,Peanut is pretty rusty as he has not been out since Oct. the 2nd.I wish he had been a little sharper and showed y'all a coupple more coon. And Scrappy.....well, has not been hunted for a year or so as we were running short on bloodline so he was a little cranky lol Tell Richard I appologize for his lack of manneres So Chris, what did you think of that little hunt? Here is Scrappy.... Plenty of pics of Peanut here... http://www.easttexashogdoggers.com/forum/index.php?topic=9241.0

Bryant, Thanks for having us out. I really enjoyed the hunt, and look forward to the next one! Here are a couple pics of the coon, and the possum that I thought Scrappy had killed

Chris & Mandi, next time yall want to come to Flatonia, give me a couple days and we can line up Arron and Courtney to bring out old Val she is an old Redbone that trees and hunts alone or with other dogs. Arrons dad used to hunt a pair of redbones before he passed away, and every now and then Aaron or his brother will take Val out for a hunt. I have not been yet, but Thomas went and said she sounds really good, The boys can tell you exactly what she is saying and let you know right before she gets treed. I would like to go along also.

krystal, that sounds fun. One of the first hog dogs I hunted behind was a redbone. He liked to find hogs in the next county over from where we turned out...good thing was we could still hear him bayed!
craig, no coon dog yet. I want to hunt behind some different ones before I make any purchases. I sure liked bryant's peanut dog, great handle, and I felt like we were hunting coons, not dogs.

Thanks Chris, I wish he was more on his game than he was. If we put him w/ that red bone he will hustle up a bit better or maybe when Matt gets his dog he would be a good dog to get her going on coon,he hunts harded when he has competition.

i grew up hunting behind walkers and i mean way behind. them things would leave the country and we would have to ride to the top of the mountians and listen for the dogs , yeh before tracking systems , and if you hunt a coon dog from the back of a mule they will get alot longer range i guess they know you can travel farther . so my advise ,if you get a walker keep him hobbled on one side and you can keep up with him just fine.

Craig, Walker is a four letter word at my house....I remember many loooong nights as a youngun waiting and looking for them dang holestiens....been w/ some good ones but even them I don't know that I would want them.
You mentioned the trophys, we have a few boxes full from the coon and sq hunts...so many that we started recycling them back to the clubs but they are all put up now. My son still keeps alot of the beagle trophys he/we won....he has about 30 across his head board but he and the old dog earned them,I keep about 8 of the big ones on the tv,that stuff used to be fun but the competitons just burned me out now days a good pleasure hunt does me just fine and since my boy is 16 he pretty much hunt them girl these days anyhow lol.

Take your camera, I think any man in his mid 80's that rides a mule to coon hunt deserves to be an internet sensation haha
