I'm glad I found this thread, ok so I got a BMC pup with the thought of hog doggin, I haven't given up that thought, but I haven't found the time to get him in the woods with other hogdogs, or a piglet to start working him in a pen at my place yet. Well, me and a friend put out some traps and got a coon yesterday. My dog is about 7 months old now, when we showed him the coon he went nuts, and when we dispatched the coon we dropped it out of the trap still kickin, he grabbed it and commenced to shakin it rough. Is this a good sign? I am salt curing the hide and am going to play with him and do some drags, want to see if he takes to them. Whenever we go in the woods he is always nose down on some kind of trail. I'm pretty sure he has some hunt in him, I just hope I can train him, never trained a huntin dog before.

The trouble is the instinct to "Tree" as opposed to hunting and having a good nose,a tree dog is hard to come by. Next time you catch a coon turn it out and give it a start and see if you can watch what tree he goes up then get your pup out and see if he can trail it to the tree if he does then encourage him to bark or "tree it" if he does bark some then knock the coon out if he don't bark then do not shoot it out for him or he will learn that he does not need to bark to get the game.

Guys, I dont know where you are geting your price information on a good coondog, $1500 would be the low end, more Like $7500 to $10,000 for a top hound . And yes Walkers is where its at, 75% of coondogs are Walkers. And no they wont leave the country unless they have to, and are not any more trashey then other dogs. And I never understood coon hunting with a cur, Its all about hearing a good race with a nice hound mouth.............

Have you ever been w/ a good cur coon dog? I know many who can and will hang w/ any of the traditional coon hound breeds and have nice open on track bawl mouths....most of the big Kemmer cur coon dogs are open on track w/ a good bawl or nice chop. I have had curs and feist that beat hounds in NKC competitions plenty and just as much pleasure hunting. Here are some pic of my cur coon dogs old and new and maybe a hound I fooled w/ from time to time. http://www.easttexashogdoggers.com/forum/index.php?topic=9241.0

I have been coonhunting with curs and it is not my cup of tea. I have a Fiest, and a half kemmer half fiest that I squirrel hunt with, and they work good for that, but dont care for their mouth.

Man I ran coondogs for years about 6 to be exact it is a blast its a lot ruffer then people give it credit for i've seen a big ol boar coon whoop a pack of hounds i've seen a dog run the same track for miles an put meat at the end of that trail i got into it pretty hardcore me an buddies used to have our own competions on the weekends they would bring them "blue ticks redbones" ect but them walker dogs sure do put the heat on them when i tree one it depends on the race if i kill it or not if that sucker runs about 100 yards an trees he'll live to run another day if that lil sucker runs 2 miles an trees he'll die a painful death by walker dog an the only time i ever tied a dog back treeing was puppies an that was just so it would drive them nuts and make them wanna be on that tree with them grown dogs an then i'd turn it loose an watch em rock an roll its a pretty awesome feeling to take a hound dog pup raise it an then train it to run and bark at nothing but a coon its an art just like any other dog huntin some people are good at fixing things some people are just good dog trainers and some arnt either way it all equals out to everyone having a blast huntin behind there dogs

Tri colored? I'm thinking that's why people don't want walker hounds, huh?
when I think coondawg, I'm thinking bluetick, redbone, or some mix.
What do those competition guys do with the hounds (or curs) that are good but older or good but not right for competing? Seems us "pleasure hunters" may be tickled with their cast offs.
Cheers M
might I ad that every good blue tick redbone ect. i ever seen was trained by a walker dog ... i have never seen a more pleasent tree dog then a treeing walker coonhound that was trained in the right hands

I have been looking for a finished open coon dog. I have really enjoyed reading this thread! I would love to go hunting with anyone to learn more as I am a beginner. I so far have only hunted with the walkers. I have heard about the curr coon dogs but havent had the pleasure of hunting with them yet. If anyone is around Iola TX I would love to go out with them or travel to go hunt somewhere else. I also have a very large ranch to hunt coons on if someone wants to come hunt with me but I dont have a dog so bring yours!!!

I dunno when this was checked last time, but I just wanted to add my two cents. There is nothing, not even a pack of dogs bayed up, that sounds as sweet, great, and spine chilling as hearing a redbone treed at 2 am on a april night.. and yes, i speak from experience.
