This is what I do. If they start up, I come out  the back door and holler. If I walk in the house and they start up again, I grab the shotgun come out the back door and shoot. No I don't shoot the dogs. I shoot in the air and all dogs will run in the dog house and shutup. Now most of the time, I just walk out and holler and they listen. As I mentioned, I don't use guns to hunt so I am not worried about a gunshy dog.

Unless it's a hog at the other end of the line, the sound of dogs barking for no reason gets under my skin.

HAHAHA I'm the same way.  i always think to myself for someone who owns so many dogs I sure do HATE the sound of barking. (non-hog related that is)

Get a bark collar, they are effective, and not cruel to the dog in any way, I have experienced one first hand and it is not that horrible. They are relatively inexpensive probably around 60-100 bucks per dog depending on the model/manufacturer.  If you have a bunch of dogs and not enough money, just rotate the collars and eventually most dogs on your yard should understand that barking in the yard is not allowed. I use 2 bark collars on 6 dogs, just rotate to the ones that forget. Once they have worn it for a week or so they usually will stay silent for a least a month when you take it off until the next time they forget and need another reminder. thats my experience anyways. some dogs are just crazy, dumb, and hard headed though and will bark regardless.
Yea they work pretty good, I had a dog that learned to bark once, wait a minutre and then bark again, I couldnt find a model that activated on the first bark, it was always a 2 and 3 bark model. I have always found that a dog barks for a reason, hunger, thirst, somethings around, even affraid of the dark

The thing is, if you have 5 dogs like I do,and they all start barking, what do you do. Five shock collars cost a lot.

Water deterents are only temporary.  Once they get used to it, that does not even slow them up.  I know from experience. Wink

I guess it must vary from dog to dog. Ive got one that will hide in his crate when I fill up his waterbucket Afro

I have used the water method for a few years and it worked but I hated getting up to go outside and blast them down so I started filling up a 42 oz cup and placing it in the backyard window where they could see it and if they decided to test me I would open the back door and fly the cup. The yard goes quiet for the rest of the night! I then got to the point I could fill up the cup and put it in the window and never have a bark all night! It worked for me but then my dogs also hide in their houses when I fill water bowls and I noticed when we reach a stream or river in the mountains they are a little more hesitant to cross but they don't bark at night any more unless there is something there but no more howling or barking cause it tickles!  laugh

I have used both the waterhose method and the bb gun.I have had better luck with the water hose especially if its really cold at night, they will run into thier dog house but I climb in the house with them. After a good doses with the hose they are shivering too bad to bark.Someone could be next to my kennels now killing me with an axe and they will not bark.Do that a few times when its really cold out and I promise you wont have any more problems.

Yes i do shoot them with the bb gun, after about 15 wks or so! after they figure it out a hush up and shake of the gun is all thats needed 90%. Between that and bark collars i have never had a problem for long and i live smack dab in the middle of the city with neighbors that hate dogs.

Yall are crazy ;DI know that sound harsh but it sure beats what I wanted to do.I think I will try the time out method the next time they bark, thats funny. That cracks me up when I see someone putting thier kids on a time out,I could see my dad giving me a timeout. All that man knew were knockouts and I sure didnt do the same thing twice.

Anyone ever tried one of those electronic kennel silencers?  Supposed to detect a bark, and emit an ultrasonic sound that can't be heard by humans but supposedly that dogs dislike?  I've seen them advertised and wondered if they work.

http://www.gundogsonline.com/bark-control-products/kennel-silencers/

I didn't click the link that you posted but I do have one of the little bird house looking ones. I was pretty skeptic but figured it was worth a shot. To my surprise, it worked pretty darn well but for one issue..... My roommate has a deaf dog and though he cant hear the damn thing, he apparently loves the recollection of his own bark. He runs the battery down and it no longer deters the others.

I did read were one guy hooked up a sprinkler system to a switch in his house. If they were barking, he turned on the sprinkler, every dog hit their house, and stopped barking. then he turned off the water.

Bryant, here is what mine looks like

http://pestcontrol.netfirms.com/super_bark_free_birdhouse.htm

I got the birdhouse to cover it like monteria mentioned to keep it out of the weather.  I think the ones you posted might be a step up from mine.  mine cost 114.00 with the birdhouse.

Electric bark collars may not work on some puppies. I have a plott hound that would freak so bad he would keep barking and it would keep shocking, even though the Tri-tronics collar has a delay.  he would run into his dog house hysterical, barking, shocking, barking for 10 minutes or more.  Really sad.  Not until he was 5-6 months old could he wear it and understood his barking was the problem and shut up.  And he is no sissy, at 4 months he bays a 150 pound mean sow and she plows him under until he catches.  it is a big 100' x 100' bay pen, so he can get away, but he does not back down.  Just not a real smart fella  Tongue
