Monkey....gone but never forgotten! RIP

« on: December 22, 2009, 08:04:31 pm »

I had some things to do this morning, but I loaded Monkey and Spur and left about noon and headed to the deer woods by myself.  Got there about 1 PM and went to the north end, where Dan and I never made it to last weekend. I had not been up there this year so went there to mainly look around. I saw one hog track had walked down one road a ways, then went into a block. I went to the next crossroad and turned and about 1/4 mile or so down this road, saw where some hogs had crossed the road and gone into the same block......hmmmm. The tracks had been driven over but looked like they had been made last night. The deer dogs guys had been all over the roads this morning.

I went to the downwind side of the block, parked and turned the dogs out. I headed into block, the wind in my face. I hadn't gone but a couple of hundred yards and I hear Monkey bark once, then squealing. I head that way as fast as I can through the cutover. It was thick in places but not bad briars......luckily.

I just about got to the dogs, saw it was a red 60-70 lb hog and out of nowhere a bigger black hog t-bones Monkey and knocks him loose. Monkey tries to catch it when he hits the ground, the black hog runs and he goes after it. The red hog had run the other way and Spur soon had it bayed.  I went to Spur and he wouldn't catch the hog (he doesn't have much bite) so I shot it with my .22 pistol as one of the deer camps wanted some hogs for a big new years eve party they have every year. About that time I hear Monkey in a running fight with a hog about 250-300 yards away, Spur leaves and goes to him. I hang a ribbon on a tree limb where (hopefully) I can find the red hog and head to the dogs.

I get there and they have a big sow caught. I run in, the sow is beating on dogs and  I leg her. I roll her , kneel on her and have two legs tied when out of nowhere a black hog rushes out of the cutover and tries to catch me sitting on the squealing sow!!

I jump up and back, the dogs go after the new hog, the sow runs off with two legs tied.......I chase after her, she turns and runs me, I about trip over downed trees and such, she turns to run so my .22 gets put to use once again! Thats two down.......I mark a tree limb with another ribbon, then hear the dogs fighting a hog, then a bay.

I head that way, hear a catch, then a fight, then a bay, then a dog squall. I get there and there is a blown over tree that the roots didn't come all the way out and it formed a cave under the tree. The dogs are in this hole with another black hog. They have it caught again, but I can't get to it. They are going round and round, hog is biting dogs, Monkey is caught on the hog, Spur is biting then baying......I finally see a hogs hind leg in the hole, grab it and pull the hog and dogs out. Roll him over (its a 90-100 lb boar) and tie him, looking for a hog to come out of the bushes to me at anytime! Luckily none did......

The dogs did good, but I had three hogs down, spread over 1/2 mile in the woods, that I now had to get....remember I am by myself........

Took the dogs to the truck, unloaded the 4 wheeler and drove it as close as I could to each hog. Finally got them all found and loaded (which took about 1 1/2 hours), called the deer camp and they were tickled to death to take the hogs. They have been running hounds all year and have killed one hog out of the place so they needed hogs for the party.

I wish I could have had someone with a video camera with me today, it would have made great video!

Here is a pic of all three hogs loaded on my 4 wheeler. Probably 250 lbs of pork total, so it was quite a load! Wish I had action pics but my hands were kind of busy today!! I  also would have loved to have my 9 month old pups with me today!!!

Looks like I need a bigger truck!!

I see you hate pulling a trailer like me.  I have one of those "la guard dog" that allows me to keep my dog box up front and have my foul wheeler bolted down.  It can be bolted down in under 30 secs.

It will save you the time and effort from unloading your dog box on every drop.  I can snap a picture if you like.

sfboarbuster, I sure could have used an extra hand today. Maybe not in CATCHING the hogs, but I sure could have used one in the dragging part.... Grin

scdogman, with that 4 door truck and long bed I just about can't get around the woods as it is, so I don't pull a trailer. Too many places I can't turn around with a  trailer. I like the dog box in the back "just in case" I see a hog I can get the dogs out quick. If teh dog box was in front of the 4 wheeler I couldn't do that. Of course, I may only see one hog a year cross a road...but I want to be ready if I do!

It was kind of wild and wooly for a few minutes today, guess thats why we hog hunt...its exciting if nothing else! Course I was on a 24,000 acre place, by myself and no one knew where I was or even that I had gone hunting.........probably not a good idea.......

I don't have to unload my four wheeler to open my dog box.  Just open the door and let them go. But my box is custom made to fit my set up.

If you wanna get on a bunch of hogs or a real big hog, go hunting by yourself. If you wanna get on a trophy boar hog go by yourself with young dogs and no bulldog..

Yeah that kinda crossed my mind when I had two legs tied on that big sow, my knee behind her ear, my hat in the other hand trying to make the dogs stay back AND tie the hog...when I hear the other hog blowing and look up and here he comes, hair up and teeth popping, from about 20 feet away......and me eye level with him......sitting on a hog that only has two legs tied.........I wonder how I ever get in these situations sometimes......... Shocked

And you guys are right about it happening when you are alone, thats usually when you get in situations where you may need an extra hand!!
