Gettin out run

It seems that my dogs are gettin outrun more and more.  They aren't finished dogs and still have a lot to learn but when they get a pig bayed it stays bayed.  But it seems recently they can't get one to stop.  Any suggestions?

i think the type of hogs you are talking about arent going to stop for anything but a running catch dog.
i mean catch that hog when they first make contact..

ill just let a few get away before i go to that.

Yeah I thought about gettin a RCD but I've been told you'll get more dogs hurt using one.  It just gets pretty frustrating not bein able to get a hog to stop

you are right about geting more dogs hurt , thats why im not going down that road.

How many dogs are you running?

How much pressure do the the hogs in the area face?

How gritty are the dogs you are running?

Are you running silent or open dogs or dogs that yip at all on track?

Is the hog bay for a second and then breaking?

I only run three bay dogs and they are not very gritty.   Two of them are silent til lookin at the pig but I have a blue lacey that can get yippy if we go a while with no hogs.  We hunt cypress creek bottoms and the sulphur river bottoms so the pigs have some pressure on them.  If my dogs get a hog stopped most of the time they can keep it stopped.  Seems like the break as soon as they see my dogs

I believe bottom is where its at! if you have a relentless dog or two you will finally get the deal closed! I think once the hogs figure out if they keep running the dogs will quit eventually. This educates the hogs and causes them to run, and run.

I run 4 rcd's and one strike dog that barks hogs usually don't get far if they move at all.

People always say speed, speed, speed. Speed won't do anything for you in the thick stuff... the fastest dog in the world is useless in that situation. Open country, sure, speed counts. But bottom is whats gonna get it done in the thick stuff.

That's why them hogs are always bayed against a creek bank, in a root ball or blow down... they chose the place to stop and fight... the dogs didn't stop them there.

Haven't had many dogs cut up than bad but it does happen even with 4.

Are these thick places?? I always thought Hawaii was far more thick then any part of Texas and my dogs that I have based off of speed with minimal bottom to get the hog stopped as close as possible to where the pig is hit has worked great for me.

Well that is a broad statement considering how vast the State of Texas is.....LOL!!!

The cur dogs we hunt are silent til looking at the hog, and if one breaks they are normally gonna stay with it. But there are times and places where we will just get smoked....and we just chalk it up to a better hog and go catch the next one........

I was talking about creek and river bottoms being thick. Doesn't sound like a thick spot compared to some of the places you have to crawl through here to answer a bay!

Big, most of the places that we hunt where you get out ran are nasty hell holes. I'm talking vines, briars, yaupon, palmettoes, all interlaced with each other... dogs can't hardly move through it. Old pine cut-overs that may be hundreds or even thousands of acres of pure crap... this is where bottom is going to get the hog bayed and speed won't help.

I also hunt several places that are open, "cattle country" as I like to call it. Lot's of pasture and blocks of woods here and there along with wooded creek and river bottoms. This is where speed comes into play and these places are a pleasure to hunt.

The bottoms we hunt are excactly like Mike said.  I've seen dogs run a hog into places you couldn't crawl through ( even though we tried anyway).   And a hog will go through it like its nothin at all.
