She is finished out and obtained all her tests to be certified as a drahthaar. Waterfowl, upland birds, and bloodtrailing. So far so good, she has found and caught a few pigs and shoats, but will not honor another bay yet. She is a hard hunter and smart as a whip with the obedience of a protection dog. I may just keep her as a bird dog and blood trailing, but I may breed her to my pit for some rough dogs/ rcds. May take her to another Drahthaar or one of my top cur dogs. She also helped with this hog, but didnt know what to think about the size of this sow. Joey Young   |

She is a real nice dog, all german imported blood and truly a fine specimen. That sow was the first hog of the year and I should have weighed her because the guy cleaning her weighs 235lbs and is 5'11". The boar that was with her was at least 100lbs bigger and we caught him in a briar patch and he managed to schuck the dogs off and knock us out of the way before we could get our hands on him. The guy in the pic had a chance to grab it but he tried to get, (John Wayne) on it and catch it with one hand and stab it at the same time. Didnt work and I cussed him for two days!

Joey, what is her temperment like? as far as does she act more like a pointer or more like a cur? I have been curious about the breed but not known anybody that actually has one to get a feel for the them.
Does she quarter like a bird dog when hunting? nose up? or down trailing?

 I actually have tried to grab a hog as it ran past me once and it wasn't half of the size of that sow you got and he drug me for a good 5 feet before I let go! It is definately not a good technique when you're out weighed by the pig! You should get back out there and get after that boar! He sounds like a test!

I can't keep up with you! Now you have a Deutsch Drahthaar ?? Incredible! These DDs are all rounders in Europe, wild boar, blood trail red deer and elk and of course, birds. A bit of a controversy brewing as a big American DD club here in the USA is trying to breed all the big game hunt out of the breed and make them gentlemen's upland game bird dogs only.

She has a real preydrive towards furred animals especially cats, that is why she came to me. She hunts with her nose to the ground mostly and is constantly moving. She makes about 300 yd loops in open field and I just know that she stays busy in the woods. First day I had her she found a pig and brought it to me. She has found and caught 3 shoats/pigs that I have seen. She has helped catch 2 good hogs, but she still won't honor a bay. I haven't bayed her in a pen yet so I don't have any idea how she is going to react to them one on one. She will find and kill a pig for sure and if it is small enough she will bring it too you if you call her.

I wouldn't know much about birddogs but she stays busy but checks everything out. No brush pile is left unchecked. I don't know if she is hunting for birds until she gets on hogs but she has a long way to go but their is no doubt that she catches on faster than a cur other than the honoring the bay. She hasn't pointed at a hog yet. Lol

Thats a Dang Nice sow there Joey. Man you can come up with some dogs. Ive never even heard of a drahthaar . In fact i cant even say that word. . LOL . I can hear you now hollering and cusing your buddy . LOL  Go get back after that big ol boar . |

Marvin, you know I was talking trash!  . He felt pretty bad but I believe I will let him slow down a bit before I go back after him. I saw him crossing the field about 30 minutes later and fired a couple of shots at him but missed and he kicked it in high gear and hit the River.
