But they can't hide.......... Grin

I loaded Monkey and my two 9 month pups and left here about 11 AM this morning. Got to the woods about noon and went to where a bigger hog had been crossing a road on a regular basis. It just seems like I couldn't ever get on him, or someone had put dogs on the track before I got there or something. The track was there today, had been driven over and had people and dog tracks on top of them where someone had tried him this morning. Well, today he had a bad day.....

The wind was strong out of the NW so I went to the downwind side of the block and turned the dogs out. The block is thick in places, planted pines grown up with palmettos and vines and briars underneath.

I was over halfway through the block when it dawned on me I hadn't seen Monkey in a while. About that time I heard him bay.....the OH SH*T kind of bay he does when its a bigger hog, not the "I am about to catch you bay" he does on sows and smaller hogs.

I eased that way and it got thicker and thicker. My pups had no clue what was going on as they had never heard a dog bay before. The palmettos were bad thick, but I got within about 30 feet and saw a big black hog popping his teeth and Monkey in his face baying. I couldn't tell just how big he was, as he had rooted out a bed in the palmettos and pine straw and was standing in a hole. Monkey had bayed him right in his bed.

Then my pups decided there may be something in that thick spot as they were winding with their heads up. One actually barked a time or two, more of a booger bark than a bay. The hog was getting nervous, I guess he thought Monkey had help coming, so I took careful aim with my old trusty .22 and he went down. Monkey piled on the hog, pups ran away (they had never heard a gun shot that close) and I ran/crawled in to make sure the hog didn't get up. About the time I got there, he rolled over and got his hind legs under him, but Monkey had him by the ear shaking him, so he fell back over. He didn't get up again. The pups came back in, barked a little, smelled the hog and even pulled a little hair.

I was "hoping" to get on a 60-80 lb hog for the pups first hog in the woods, but thats the way it goes when you hunt pups. Its tough to hunt alone at times and not be able to get done what you want....

Here are a couple pics, the guys at Bailey's deer camp took the pic...not the best pic in the world, doesn't show the hog well, but its what I have. I would guess the boar weighed around 130-140 as I had to struggle to get him on the tailgate, then the dogbox by myself. I wish I knew someone close to me that had a GOOD catchdog, that could go with me......I hate shooting these hogs, but the deer camps all want them, so I keep bringing the hogs to them!

Man I hate hunting these aggrevating close hunting hot nosed dogs.............. Grin

He had the right amount of teeth to cut my pups......

The stuff he was in. I actually had a pic of the hog where he fell but accidently deleted it trying to make room on the camera so the deer camp guys could take a pic of the hog on the box......

sfboarbuster, you have a good catchdog??

I could have caught him with two of my grown dogs but I don't like doing that when I am alone on 24,000 acres...with no help!

If you make it in GH next year we will have more pics of tied hogs, as I will have some help!

Thats how most of my grown dogs are. I can hunt Monkey and Spur together as Spur isn't going to catch and Monkey knows that. But I can't hunt any two of my other grown dogs together or they will catch hogs like this as soon as they find them. Thats how they get cut up........

I want TWO dogs that will bay together, then lead in a sure enough anchor one catch dog and catch the hog. I don't want a "maybe" catch dog, as thats how I have gotten my dogs wrecked the worst, in the past.

If a dog runs in like he is going to catch, my dogs are going to take ahold. If the dog doesn't catch, my dogs get an A$$ whooping by the hog they thought the "catch" dog was going to anchor.....

Thats why I need someone with a GOOD catchdog.......

Monkey is okay, he is just what I have to hunt right now. If you notice in the first pic, his eyes are shut. It is cold here (down to 21 degrees tonight) and has been cold for about a week solid. Rare for it to stay that cold for that long here.

Anyway, Monkey is wore out from hunting so much and was about to fall asleep in the sunshine when we were taking the pic.....guess I need to give him a couple days off!

Good hog crackerC!

It doesnt sound like those pups are going to work out for ya to me. Send em on over to Texas and I will see if I can salvage what little bit of hog dog they may have in them. Grin  Wink

Alan, be careful what you wish for....... Grin  The jury is still out on these pups, they are the Bob x Red pups. I need to really start hunting them, as they are 9 months old and today was only their second trip to the woods. They are definately BIG enough to go, they are bigger than Monkey. They still just act like pups though, running and playing in the woods today.

I hope to really start putting them in the woods so I know what they are going to do. The ringneck one is more personable, the solid red one doesn't want to be caught, doesn't want to go in the box, etc. All things they have to learn.......

good hunt cracker,

i think your right , looks like you could use a young gun with a couple catch dogs.

shure would be nice to have some help draging and loading hogs too.

do you start your pups in a pen before you take them to the woods ?

Craig, I wish I had ONE good hunting partner that had a good catch dog to hunt with me. Problem I have is most guys I know A) Either can't hunt during the week
B) Have a pen full of sh#teaters they want to turn out..all at once....with YOUR dogs
C) Aren't much help in the woods

I had a few young guys go with me once or twice. When they realized I was catching hogs 1/2 mile to a mile from the truck (and may have to drag a hog that far), may walk 5 miles in a day with the dogs, often in thick palmettos and briars....it kind of weeded a lot of them out!

It sure is harder to drag and load the hogs myself now, than it was 25-30 years ago.....I just can't figure out why..... Shocked

lol. You're just out of shape is all!

Those pups looked great in the pictures you posted months ago!. Im looking forward to seeing pics of them in the woods and posed with hogs that they will soon start finding now that they have some age and size to them.

yes sir , hunting like that will sort the girls from the buys.

i hunt alot with a 60yr old guy, he is tough as nails, but he needs me and my catch dog from time to time.
he called last night wanted to know if we were going , sat morning .   i told him since it is going to be 0 or below 0 with 15 below wind chill, i was staying home with the girls.  i think he just wanted me to back out first.  Grin

you need to get you a good mule or horse to drag those hogs with..

Hey...ROUND is a shape........ Grin Thats the shape I am anymore....LOL Too much sweet tea and desserts I guess!

I hope the pups do well. I have messed with them a couple times with a hobbled hog. First time they did real good, second time they barked some, then ran around chasing each other and playing like the hog wasn't there.

This is unusual for pups I raise, most are catchy by this age. These seem to be slower maturing so I have been patient with them......so far.

These are the first pups by the Bob dog and the first litter from my Red female, so we really didn't know what to expect. Both parents are gritty, so I am kind of surprised the pups haven't shown more interest. They act like they are 3-4 months old instead of 9 months old.

Craig, I used to raise some mules. Had horses for 25 years too. Got out of both, so now am down to a 4 wheeler (that doesn't eat) and two 50 year old legs.......
