I bought some wheat germ oil today at a feed store. Gonna start adding it to my dog food in small amounts and see if it helps with their coats and energy levels. Anyone ever tried this?

Haven't tried the wheat germ, but if it works I'd like to know. We've been using Nutracal-keeps weight on them great when they're hunting hard. Also heard of putting olive oil on top of their food will keep em' looking good. There's nothing worse than seeing skinny dogs-hunting hard or not!

It's been a few days now. I can't see a difference yet, but they sure don't mind eating the stuff.

I like to use soybean oil 15cc keeps the dogs in good shape with a lot of energy it will take 2 week to see . you know it is hard to build a dog up but not to take one down.

So far so good. I am giving them about 1 tablespoon a day. My really big dog is getting a little more. I picked up a really really poor red bone today. I guess I'll see just how good the stuff really is.

Just a heads up on the Wheat Germ Oil, It is a great source of Omega 6 but if it outweighs your dogs Omega 3 intake it could be hazardous to their health. I believe the ratio is something like 10(6) to 1(3) has shown to cause problems.

I read that also. I never did find a ratio that everyone agreed on as safe. "n−3 and n−6 compete for the same metabolic enzymes, thus the n−6:n−3 ratio will significantly influence the ratio of the ensuing eicosanoids (hormones), (e.g. prostaglandins, leukotrienes, thromboxanes etc.), and will alter the body's metabolic function." I have been giving my dogs fish oil capsules periodically for a long time. I think that if I give those in conjunction with the wheat germ oil, the ratio won't be too skewed.

I have been giving my dogs Cod liver oil daily for 3 months and have added the wheat germ oil into the mix for the past 2 weeks at a ratio of 3(6) to 1(3) and alternating the oils every other day. I see a difference in energy and coat so far for about the cost of another bag of dog food every 2 months and I've got 5 dogs. I read somewhere that 1:1 or 3:1 was safe and that it is when you get up to the 10:1 ratio when you could end up with problems. The main factor in supplementing your dogs vitamins is to monitor the amount given in order to avoid toxicity but the point of overdose is extremely high for extended periods. Good luck! I will see if I can find the information on the ratios and Pm you the link.

My dogs hunted long and hard today. I had to call them in when it got close to time for me to go to work. They still had alot of hunt left in them.... I didn't. I think it may have to do with the extra calories from the oil.

Black Gold and Victor alone will give your dogs all the energy they need and their coats will be as shiny as any of them. There is no substitution for good dog food. just my .02 Bacon grease= lots of cholesterol(which =) fat not healthy
