I got rid of one that did the same thing. She turned out great for the guy that got here. I vowed I would never do that to another. I would run her with an older dog that wont quit a few times and they seem to "get it" after that.

Richard,

It's quite possible that could have done it.  A young dog is very impressionable and if she's scared of gunshot chances are she remembers.  Don't think it would have ruined her, but it may take some time to rebuild her confidence.  The dog I had quit hunting all together.  It took a while, and I almost sold him but I knew what he was like before and I waited him out.  It took some time, but he came around.

I'll put my dogman hat on for a second.  Wait not qualified to be one.  I really need to change my handle.

But seriously....................

Are you sure she didn't have a bad experience at the bay while your friend had her?

Tree dogs who have been roughed up by dogs that fight at the tree will sometimes quit treeing when another dog arrives.

It could by one of many things or a combination of alot.  Just throwing another idea out.

Dogs like that are not worth much, so I would cut your loss quick.  I just so happen to have a fellow call me about a dog like that last night.  Now I don't know what he wants him for, but I a sure you could sell him her.  He is not wanting to pay much, but I am sure I can talk him out of say 200 to 250 dollars.  Let me know quick before he changes his mind. I hunted this dog for a couple months last year when she was barely over a year old and she did excellent, hunted her butt off, always busy, bayed well, even caught a couple small pigs. I wouldn't give up on her.

she is on the right, very cool dog

Either actually gun break her or get her in a pen with another dog and let the have a jam session. It'll come back.

I think people....in general...expect to much out of a two year old dog........

at two years, they are just starting to put the puzzle together.....

You must make good money and elect to put your money into dog food.  I myself think it may be better to invest in a better line of dogs.  At 2 years old, they should be impressing your hunting partners and you.

Well let's see......if i can key you in to what i'm trying to say....

Show me a 2 yr old dog that will strike a hog off the box by himself.....and i will be impressed
Show me a 2 yr old dog that can put an end to a track on the road.....and i will be impressed
Show me a 2 yr old dog that will run a hog for 3 or 4 miles by itself
and be bayed at the end                                                   ......and i will be impressed
Show me a 2 yr old dog that will load on command and respect
a caught hog                                                                 .......an i will be impressed

Show me a 2 yr old DOG that will do ALL of that ON A PREDICTABLE CONSISTANT BASIS.......well......I don't think you can show me that dog........

HOWEVER......I just got done feeding two 5 year old dogs that can.......get my drift....... Wink

I would have to agree w/you...we cull hard on our dogs - if they arent catching their own hogs consistently by 2/2.5 they are outta here.  Our puppies start riding when they are 6 months to get their manners and by 8 months are in the cane atleast attempting to hunt, at 12 months they are right there with the big dogs helping out and by 15 months most are doing it on their own with a few hiccupps here n there (which is to be expected).

Our dogs ride on the truck/wind off the box, they MUST load up on their own with out having to get out of the truck or the have an extremly long run ahead of them...some are a little harder to get off a hog than others but we carry a hot shot - after a jolt they go back to the truck and load up or keep hunting.

We have a 2 year old now that has only 3 legs (he was born with no socket/ball joint in his hind leg), at 4 months old he would bay/catch in a field on his own; by the time he was 8 months old he was trailing and catching his own hogs consistently....now he is an all nighter - if it takes 4 hours to run him down then thats what he will do and if you turn your back on him he is liable to sneak off on you after youve caught it...but that is the line of dogs he is out of - the man that bred him has guaranteed good dogs and has been breeding them for a very long time, only keeping the best of the best.  **His hiccups are his whines in the box, hates to ride/wind from the truck and cant load up on his own**

You will always have short comings in dogs/lines of dogs but I believe by 2 their true colors should be out and shining or someone else can feed'em.

Like a lot of dogs, this one just needs to be hunted. A lot.

Dan, are you saying that 2 year olds doing all those things is not common?  Huh?
