Are you for sure it was a hog and not trash?  some of my dogs will bump a deer or something and bark a couple of times then quit.

I have a friend whose dog started doing this same thing.

It would bay for a minute, then come back and lay down, never been cut before.
He acts like he found the hog and his job is done.

We had a little female that would do that - the last time we took her out with the other young dogs she started baying her own hog, then she quit and come out to the truck.  She was gritty and would bay like a maniac in the open but she just flat out hated hunting the cane.

We sold her to a guy that was looking for a young/started dog...he LOVES her and she hunts hard for him in the woods.  My husband regrets getting rid of her now that he has seen her hunt but she wouldnt hunt the cane or anything hard like she does for his buddy.

Some dogs just do not hunt well for certain people, with other dogs/strangers or some prefer the wide open compared to the thick stuff.

I think people....in general...expect to much out of a two year old dog........

at two years, they are just starting to put the puzzle together.....

My best strike dog....at two years old.....would cast out wide....by himself....and strike and hold the hog till you got there......like a pro.......but when you finally got to him......he would come out to you wagging his tail......kinda like  "look what i got".......and then go back in and wreck the hog......

at three years old......he quit that altogether.....he just needed more time to mature.....

I would definitely NOT give up on her.  I've seen dogs do that and worse and finally get it all together, and what Pecos might be referrering to, is that those dogs got it all figured out after they were given away or traded off, and became most excellent hunters.
Hang on to her, and one thing i would try is to let her hunt, keep a jam up pack dog close, and when she bays, send that pack dog in.
Must be a pack dog that won't quit baying and fast to honor her bay.  She might need a little encouragement and confidence that you are right behind her or that help is right behind her.  She'll be fine, just give her time  Grin

Sounds like a good problem, does she only w\quit when the other dogs get there to take over, then she goes on and hunts more or does she quit before help dogs arrive?? Leave her tied up and make her watch other dogs in a pen.

She will snap out of it on her own with time i would presume. Good Luck

Thanks guys makes me feel like she can get fixed... She used to be were she would bay fine but recently i let a bud try her and he said when she find em she would stop just about as he got there, i guess this is just her wanting to simply find the hogs, but she dont want to play with em Grin

You must make good money and elect to put your money into dog food.  I myself think it may be better to invest in a better line of dogs.  At 2 years old, they should be impressing your hunting partners and you.

Ellis,

You buddy that had her wasn't going into a bay and shooting the hogs was he?  A number of years ago when I was still baying and shooting I got a new dog that hadn't been shot around.  I didn't think much of it, other than he would get used to it.  I killed two hogs in front of him and just about ruined the dog in the process.  I figured that after a couple times, and him not liking gunshots that when I got close to the bay he knew what was about to happen and would quit and come out.  If not shooting, is your buddy perhaps doing something else?  Making lots of noise, hollering back at other people or anything that the dog's not used to?

Bryant now that you said that, it was the last time she bayed right and did right we ended up having to shoot the hog Shocked. Did i ruin her? Should i put her in a bay pen and encourage her?
