How old is to old to start training?

I have just found 2 pure catahoulas that are 8 months old. Some have told me that this is an ok age to introduce them to hogs....??

 That would be a good age to start them, most people will tell you between  6 months and 1 year.

I would say that this is not too old to start them. Your best bet would be to get them around some smaller hogs in a bay pen, perhaps with an experienced dog, and see how they react and find out how much hunt they have in them. An 8 month old dog still has a lot of pup in them and can be taught a lot.

I like to start messing  with pups cause its fun and lets you get a chance to handle them, teach some manners get them leash broke and riding in a truck and dog box and maybe bay a small hog here and there. However many of mine don't get started hunting or really working until nearly a year old. I have taken several older mature dogs and started them on hogs and was very happy to not have to mess with puppy immaturity. Last year I was asked to start a 5 year old dog on hogs and was plenty pleased with the dogs abilty to take to it in just a few months he was making the "A" team. did not have to waste time waiting, feeding and watching him grow.

Its never to old to start a god in my Op. One Of my best strike dogs. (Hes Getting old and Slow now) but he was a redbone that a buddy of mine gave me that just came up to his house we guessed him to be at least a year and a half or two years. He dident seem interested the first few times i showed him a pig. But about the 5th time i took him to the bay pen something snaped and he has been balls to the walls ever scense.

I agree with Ugly Dog.I mess with and haul my pups around all over the place.But dont really start them till they are a year old.DONOT get in a hurry with a young dog.That is why GOOD DOGS COAST MORE.

They are not too old for sure but just be careful to not get them on a big hog and get banged around. If this happens one of two things will happen,,,,they will either quit baying or if they got a little grit? they will start catching. Start off with smaller hogs until they get where they can work a hog and they know what end to bit to stop a hog. Then start by tying a hog up in the woods 3 or 400yrds and then go walk down wind with the puppies so they can wind it. Once they start winding and trailing you pretty much have it wooped......Just one thing to remember.....DOGS CANT HUNT IN THE KENNEL OR ON THE CHAIN!!!!!KEEP EM IN THE WOODS!!!!IM JUST SAYIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
