Need info on hog hunting

Im new to hog hunting with dogs. I have talked to several hunters and they told me to go hunt with someone that knows.
I have now hunted with a older man for the last 2 months more less helping him with whatever he needs.
My Question is I like the style he hunting off 4 wheelers and riding ATV's.
He has several properties that are around 300 to 400 acres.
He just drives around the edge of the woods and his dogs hunt in front of us about 100 yrs or so going in and out of the woods on short runs.
When we get on a good trail they will leave out.
Is this the way most guys hunt or should the lead dogs be hunting out futher to cover more of the center of the 300 acre tracts?
I am getting ready to start buying some dogs and I want to make sure I get a good dog So if this is standard hunting of most dogs I won't be looking for something not available.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If your going to be hunting small places like that I would stick with short range dogs.

I will be hunting several large ranches smallest being around 3000 acres that my family owns.

I would probably look for some dogs with a little more range. Dont know what kind of country your hunting. I would look for dogs that hunt the woods and not just run the roads. You may want to find someone hunting some bigger properties with some longer range dogs or let someone who has some longer range dogs come hunt with you on your places. I bet it wouldnt be hard to find someone that would come out.

Back to the Question Are there dogs that will get out and hunt deeper in the woods or is the dogs I described in the post kind of the norm?

None of our properties have ever been hunted with dogs.
I would like to find someone intrested in helping me find a couple of good dogs and then When you bring your dogs for me to buy we can hunt these places.

We did ariel surey last Sept and we had over 200 pigs in one pasture 4500 acres, We have around 22,000 acres that can be hunted. So I don't think its going to be any trouble finding pigs.

Yes there are dogs that hunt out farther than the ones you described.

if they are good dogs they are covering the whole place hunting the way the oldman  showed ya they cover lots of area with that nose if its a good one

This man I've hunted with uses redbone hounds and curs.
The two redbones find most of the pigs we have caught.
What breed of dogs would suggest me staying with?
What would be a reasonable price to give for a good lead dog?
What would be a fare price for just dogs to help out in the catch?

you should beable to get ya a good going strike dog for 500-800 and a couple started help dogs for 300 - 400 i use bmcs and catahoulas

bmc are good strike dogs the got good nose and lots of heart  most of them turn in to good dogs if ya work them right

like you said hunting on the place you described, you can use just about any kind of dog and catch lots of hogs..

 however if you want a good solid dog i would find a med. range silent cur to start out with , if the dog has a good nose and is hunted properly ( into the wind ) it can cover alot of ground with its nose like bayrat said.

  i prefer a BMC but every guy you talk to will have a different opinion.

 price:  thats what ever you feel like paying.      i have given guys dogs like that and then it could cost you $2000

 help dogs are a dime a dozen , mostly free to 100

  just remember any dog is going to show good in those conditions,,,,  good luck..

always get a 2 week trial on a strike dog or bay dog  try to pic the dog up at there house so ya know where to go and get your money back if its a pot licker becareful
