The only experience I have with red mange was with a pup that was given to me. Cant remember what the vet prescribed but be careful! Along with your other dogs you and the rest of the family can catch it.

Me, my wife, and my kids ended up on meds!

I had a dog that had it once before and hers should up on her feet and legs. It just so happened that we had just changed oil in a vehicle and she stepped in the used oil and a few days later it was gone. Talked to the local vet and he said that would work but Red Mange is heriditary and it never is completely gone away. He also recommended not to breed her because the pups would more than likely get it.

Red mange cannot be caught, that is sarcoptic mange.  We use zimectrin gold - one click for every 40lbs per day.  The vet may prescribe Mitaban but it has never worked for us, it only made the dogs sick and you cannoy combine it with Ivomec.

Sarcoptic mange is curable by using Paramite which you can buy from ag-vet.. We use 1 tsp per gallon.  It is also great for ticks/fleas and has a 30 day residual.

We have several dogs out of the same line and it is definately gentic but it is manageable througha good diet and clean pens once you get it cleared up - it can just be a PITA if they have it bad.  The vet may also tell you that you need to spay/nueter due to the hormones but I haven't seen a case yet that wasdnt curable...some just take longer than others.

OOOPS.
I thought Red mange and Sarcoptic mange where the same.
Its been about 8 years ago and my wife had to send medication for me out to the rig I was working because I caught it and so did the rest of the family.
I never talked to the vet about it and got all the information from my wife.

Thanks for clearing that up for me Mrs hogaholic. Smiley

I have a hard time telling the difference between the two, I usually dip them first and then a week later start them on a daily dose of zimectrin.  I have found that red mange is greasy and sarcoptic is kinda flakey with a smell.

i had a pair of greyhounds get sarcoptic mange from a coyote. 1 cc of ivomec everyday for 21 days. it cleared up without problems.

for a plott pup with demodex (genetic) mange i gave half a cc of ivomec for twenty one days.

i had a border collie pick up sarcoptic mange from the greyhounds, and i dissolved BORAX twenty mule team detergent with peroxide and doused the area everyday for a week or so.

all cases cleared up as easy as that.

twenty one days is the life cycle of a mange mite, and the infected dogs need persistant treatment throughout the entire cycle.

Just keep in mind that Red demodex mange is usually a good indication that the dog has weak/weaker immune system.  Sometimes as a dog ages and its immune system gets stronger, the red mange will go away for awhile but stress and other things can cause a it to come back.  A female that has had red mange before should never be bred as the weaker immune system will be genetically passed on which will result in a higher precentage of her pups having demodex too sometime during their lives. at least that is what the research i read indicated.

there is a new product similar to frontline for fleas and ticks.  cant remember the name, but my vet told me one dose cures it in most cases (both types).  it isnt approved for labeling yet, cause it hasnt been tested by the fda, but vets are noticing that it works.  it comes in a yellow package with black letters.
