I learned my lesson this weekend on running a garmin collar. I have lost my best dog, Booger, in the woods this weekend. Something weird happened. He ran hogs for a little over two miles, stopped and ran his track back in, he got to a certain point and I went to him. The garmin showed me to be about 100 yards from him it showed him treed and in a sitting position and all of the sudden lost signal. Never picked up signal again and havent seen Booger since yesterday about 10:30 am. I have searched the woods following his tracks and nothing. The garmin in my eyes now is a pos! I charged the collar over night and it had a full charge on it. Its like he just disappeared.

Mason, I sure hate to hear that and I hope you find him.
Fella's i've been preaching this all along... don't trust the Garmin, put a radio collar on for insurance.

just to encourage you a bit, back in the old days before tracking systems, all we had was our Phone number on the collar! Ive been doggin for 30 years and Ive never lost a dog. If he is alive he will show up.

You may have already done this but I would go back to the last place you had him and zoom in as far as you can. Get as near to the exact spot as possible. It sure sounds possible he could be in the water.

Have you checked the local vet, Animal control, pound? I lost a dog last week and it was the vet who got us the information to find him.
Where was he lost at? Do you have a picture?

man that sucks. hope you find him soon. garmins are far from perfect, but antennas on collars break from time to time, Ive even seen it happen on radio collars. hopefully someone finds him and calls you.

Not trying to make things worse, but I just found this post. Up until 2 months ago, I never used any tracking collars. I bought a Garmin Astro unit and two collars and so did my bro-n-law. This past Saturday, we were training pups in a 5 acre bay pen. Not sure what happened, but one of his collars just stopped working, much like what is described here. I was tracking all the dogs on my unit, as he was doing the same. We were using them to see what dog was where and which one was out hunting the other, not that we needed them in a pen.
His dog Pancho just went dead, no warning, nothing out of the ordinary - just stopped transmitting. Once we were back at the truck, we tried to re-establish communications with the collar to no avail. We had to delete the collar from the dog list, then reconnect to it before it started working again. It worked fine after that, but it was very strange. Not sure how much I will trust it out in the woods!

I think i got a lead on what happened to booger. I went to a guys house today where booger was last on the garim and the guy was real nervous and had alot to say like out of nowhere "I didnt shoot your dog" and "my neighbor may have him she is known to steal dogs and not give them back and thinks hog hunting is cruel" thats just a couple of things he said but right when I lost communication I had the sitting dog icon pop up and then the tree icon popped up and then I lost communication like bam bam bam. What I think is that this ol boy called my dog up to him, Booger sat down looked up at him while he was either turning the collar off or taking it off and throwing it in the creek. I called the sherriffs deputy cuz I had so much suspicion about this guy and because the Garmin did what it did. They should go and do an investigation sometime this week. It was weird to begin with and it is just getting weirder, but I'am starting to put two and two together and I will not quit until I found out what happened to him. Keep your eyes out and ears open for a hog huntin dobberman. Thanks
Mason
