Folks, I need some input on a dog. This dog is about 4 years old and has been one of the best strike dog any of my hunting partners and I have hunted behind. He was always gritty and would catch ne thing under 100#. Well here lately he won't even bark when he finds a hog, he is straight catching. Its getting to the point where we don't want to take him hunting b/c of broken bays, and the chance of getting out other non-gritty dogs hurt. We have been on a few 200# hogs this year so far and have yet to hear him bark once. Anyone have a similar thing happen? Getting ready to sell him b/c he doesn't fit in with our pack of non-gritty dogs. I hate to lose one of our best/favorites but can't let him sit in the kennel the rest of his life....Any input is appreciated.

if you have a bay pen try tying him back and that should make him bark do that a few times and maybe put a dog in the pen that will just bay  that may help him realize that you just want him to bay and you might be able to back him up with a shock collar.

Is he catching one out or just with help.  If he is catching one out he may just be a catchy dog. If he is only doing it with help you may have to hunt him with less dogs or he may have found him a buddy that he knows will catch with him.  I have knpwn several you couldnt hunt togather because they would catch but with out the other they would bay. Just a thought.

You need to hunt him by hisself. I have a year old puppy that is a jam up pup, but if I hunt him with someone else's dogs(gritty) he will not bark. The two boars we caught the other night, he just ran in and caught the first one and of corse he had the bigger teeth and got a pretty good slice. My opinion is to hunt him by hisself and he will start backing up. Yust my opinion!

Good opinions above, if they dont work maby try running a muzzle on him. The kind I have allows them to drink and bark but not bite, it was only 7 bucks at petsmart.

If this guy doesn't answer the phone then PM me. Grin

A friend of mine has a dog like this. He hunts him one dog out and catches plenty. If you hear him bayed you better have the catch dogs vested! It will be a big one!
There is a big difference in a dog like this and a bay buster.

My view on this is simple. The only thing wrong with this dog is that he don't fit your style. Change your style or sell him.

Thanks for all the responses guys. This dog is usually alone when he strikes(catches), so I don't think hunting him alone would change anything, but I will try it.  I thought about using a muzzle, but figured it would restrict  breathing...might have to try it in a pen and see how he works with one.

Yea give it a try, I promise if you get the right kind of muzzle it wont effect the breathing much. you just may need to shop around for the right one....with that said i probably wouldnt do it durring summer. I would be worried about him not being able to stop one??

Thats a big problem in my opinion b/c if he is your #1 stike dog he is going to be caught a long ways off! Thats Dangerous!

idk if it works with all dogs but we put my dog in a pen with a hog and put a shock collar on him and every time he catches buzz him until he lets go. and keep adding dogs to him and doing the same thing idk it worked for me but every dog is different

Thats really sound advice. The first thing i would do would be the above mentioned advice but sart him with a badass illuminator hog that will not be caght by one dog and let it back him up.....teach an old dog some new respect. A good a$$ whippin is good for everyone now and then  Wink

Due to others replies I re read your post. Im not sure. Has this dog turned into a baybreaker or are you just worried that he will?
If so:
In my experience a muzzled bay breaking dog just makes a "worse" bay breaking dog and stands a better chance of getting himself and other dogs in more trouble than he would without it. From what I have seen with other dogs is they try even harder to catch with the muzzle on and makes a bay even crazier and shorter. I have my theories why the dogs reacted this way with the muzzle but Im not sure.
Im not disagreeing with using a muzzle just sharing my experience with them. Different dogs react differently to things.

I have never personally used the shock collar technique described by "lazyjhogdogs" but I have seen it used with great results.
If it were my dog I would try the shock collar before the muzzle.
