rough dogs seem to be more consistant but sometimes pay the price.  loose dogs let more hogs slip by and u do a lot more chasing dogs through the woods.just my opinion

here is my .02, most of the hogs that i have hunted here at home these hogs will run a little but usually always bay after a while, and i havnt had much trouble with them getting away. BUT the dogs that i was runnin then were gritty, would bight to stop a hog but would bout 2 - 5 feet and bay tight, and would help catch when the catch dog arrived. However, on my recent hunt down south, were the hogs were dog smart and marathon runners, these hounds looked like crap. Now the one thing " i might have over looked" i think that i would like to have a little more of is SPEED, my plott will put teeth to one "IF" she can catch it. she was dang sure runnin the hair off them hogs, and the couple times i seen her she was lookin at them, bout 20 yds back. and doin her best to catch them.
JMO i have to go with the more grittier, rough dogs. my thinkin is if you have a hog that has it in his mind that he aint going to stop, then you gonna need a dog that will make him stop, and IMO the only way to stop a runner with a dog that wont put teeth to one is to out run it and cut it off, to try and stop it.
But what do i know Grin

try finding a fox or coyote hunter who runs julys and breed to his roughest dog the roughest cur dog you can find you will have tons of speed and grit without sacrificing nose mite add mouth but that can be trained outa them...jmo of course
