Not necessary if you are acting as the land owner's agent doing depredation control.  However, for less than $20.00 it's cheap insurance to go ahead and get the license.

isn't that only if you leave them lay??  at least that's what i was told by the local game warden.

Been their done that.
Get a license. Even spectators will need them. The game warden will give you a ticket regardless and let a judge sort it out.

A hunting license is required of any person, regardless of age, who hunts any animal, bird, frog or turtle in this state (except furbearers, if the hunter possesses a trapper's license). No license is required for nuisance fur-bearing animals, depredating hogs or coyotes (see below). Non-residents under 17 years of age may purchase and hunt with the Youth Hunting License (Type 169).

Exceptions: a hunting license is not required to hunt the following:

Coyotes, if the coyotes are attacking, about to attack, or have recently attacked livestock, domestic animals, or fowl.
Depredating feral hogs, if a landowner (resident or non-resident) or landowner's agent or lessee is taking feral hogs causing depredation on the landowner's land.
Fur-bearing animals, if the hunter possesses a trapper's license or if the fur-bearing animals are causing depredation.

The above is copied/pasted from TPWD.
KNOW THE LAW!!! IGNORANCE OF THE LAW IS NO EXCUSE!!!!
Those that hunt for ranchers and farmers, buy it!
Those hunting them because they tear up a 3 acre food plot for deer, buy it!
If you are hunting any animal without a liscense, I hope you get a ticket, then have to take off work to go explain this to the judge, and he slaps you with the court costs, all because you didn't want to pay for the license.
What if.......What if.......What if.......... buy the license, avoid the headache for you and the Warden, or stay home.
This is directed at no one in particular, but everyone on this site.

yep, the only way i've been told to get out of it is by having signed contracts from the landowner and then it needs to be drawn up to cover some key points to even be worth the paper its written on and then you could still be cited and have to get it thrown out in court..  $30 is a lot cheaper than the citation and possible court costs/legal fees.

Again, that piece of paper won't be an excuse, and likely make you look even dumber in court.
BUT..... the $30 license is guaranteed to be safety.

What kills me is this scenerio..... so and so has a wheat field (haygrazer, grass, hay meadow, whatever) and those hogs are tearing it up.
I can hunt them because I'm acting as the landowners agent, so I do not need a license because they are depredating.
Your right, but as a Game Warden, I'm out at 3 am, I check you and ask for your hunting license.
Last thing I want to hear is "I don't have to have one! BLAH BLAH BLAH!"
I'm going to explain to you how you can explain all that to the judge, as I am breaking a ticket off in your butt for everything possible.
I'm going to check all firearms, vehicles, dogs, ATV's, trailers, etc. and if I feel the need, seize them as evidence.

Oh yea......try telling him he can't seize them......that'll surely help out your cause. Grin

Now not only have you made yourself out as a thorn, I hold your buddy (the landowner) in the same category, as someone who allows jerks to hunt.

Ever heard the expression "Poop runs downhill"? Or the famous "snowball effect"?

I'll likely be poking around his place as often as possible.

All because you THINK you don't need a license, could have shown it to me and I likely know of another landowner or 2 that would have let you come hunt.
But now I'm not going to offer you those 2 places, totalling 5,000 acres of free hunting.

I know, I know, the law states you don't have to, at times, but doesn't having one sound a little better than not? Wink

Know the law, follow it, have fun enjoying the great outdoors safely, and take a kid with you hunting and teach them the same.

This thread kinda follows this line of conversation. I dont know how many yaw out there that hunt hogs, deer or any other animal, that served in the military, but if you are 30% or more disabled or are on active duty military status in the state of tx. YOu can get a super combo with all endorsements minus migratory game bird for FREE. If your disabled you take your VA rating sheet to the local liscence issuing place and show the clerck the rating sheet and you pay nothing, almost same with active military, you just show your miilitary ID. Make sure they give you the liscence, the local gander mnt tried charging me and i had to show them the regs in the hunting guide. Remember its FREE take advantage of it and use it, you served your time now take what is FREE. As was said in the threads above, be on the safe side, read the law and get your liscence and who ever is hunting/watching you hunt, its cheaper than the ticket.
