I have 6 that are Plott x Catahoula, absolutely fabulous hog dogs. Mine are all silent.
Paul i always respect what you say, i have personally had horrible luck with them being silent for a year or more and then opening up randomly for no reason making me cull after all that hard work etc....how do you do it?

I have a Plott/Cat gyp that is silent, just gritty enough and usually hunts out between 600 and 900 yards, which is about how I like em!  She is not the greatest dog ever but she can and has found hogs on a regular basis.

I really don't have any secret, but I do work all these dogs on cattle a lot when they are young. I do believe that a dogs first year at work wires its brain. So I spend the first half of a pups first year mostly working cattle. I "think" that might help. Those pups get to bay and hold cattle for hours and hours and they get real tired and they get real quiet. Or it could just be this line of dogs and all in the genes.

Interesting posts, my personal opinion is that for most of us I lean toward a good cur because its not worth them opening up as they age and a half doesnt seem to hunt any deeper or harder than a solid cur. Just my .02 but i have seen a handfull and am probably comparing against better than avg curs

I truly believe that a Plott/cur cross can and often will be the best hog dog you will ever have. I've seen a lot of dogs over the years and I don't remember ever seeing a Plott/cur cross that didn't make a good dog, some make super dogs that will just make you rethink what a dog is capable of doing if they put their mind to it and have the drive to get it done. It doesn't seem to matter much what kind of cur you cross a Plott with either, they're probably gonna make a dog that you'll be proud of.

To me they will almost always have a better nose that a straight cur dog.. and their nose will mature at a much faster rate ....BUT those with more than a 1/4 plott tend to kind of beller on track a bit...

This shows that I (and most of us) have not come close to seeing it all. I have rarely seen one hunt any deeper or harder than a good cur and alot open up. Dont get me wrong i have hunted with 3 good ones...clay, daisy, and spiderman but thats 3 out of 20, and hunt with alot that are avg dogs.

Hounds have a better sense of smell = better nose! some hounds have a better nose than others! I have been rasing hounds for 35 years, I have seen black and Tans and Blueticks run a track that one of our Walkers couldnt even smell. Dave Dean of Michigan is a premier breeder of the American Bluetick Hound, He owns the Hammer line! 50 years ago he introduced some pointer into his line to give them a little more nose. There is night and day difference in our strait curs and our hound cur crosses when it comes to running a track! You can watch them on a Garmin and the hound crosses will run off and leave the curs on a track (Fresh or Cold)

This gyp has proven her ability to take a little colder track than my curs but she can't run a track faster and she is open when a hog breaks but she dont bark trailin to one. I prefer a silent dog but despite popular opinion  I have friends with open dogs that can run and shutdown a hog as fast as any silent dog

back in the day most of the bmc and cats around this part of the country didn't take cold tracks but the ones I saw back then that were really good had hound in them. I am willing to bet that a lot of these dogs today that are really good curs probably have some hound in them from way back. I have seen a lot of talk on this board about half this and half that.

The right strain of mtn cur will drift on a track and find the hot end quick and get gone. They are somewhere in the middle of the cur and hound.

First year wires the brain.... I agree with Silverton's quote. Same with humans. They say that the younger the children are who take music lessons who play an instrument , have a larger than average communication nerve between the left/right side of the brain.
