We competed in the Randy Bumpers Contest this past weekend and caught a few hogs. Team members were Kolby Crowson, Kole Savage, David Delesandri and I. Helpers were Tony Shelly, Chance Savage, Marshall Mims, and Kevin and Jim Bo Parrick. We hunted in Madison County, the same place where we caught the 354lb barr last wknd. We divided all of our dogs into two packs and cast the young dogs first at 8 a.m., from then on we were so busy tieing hogs that we did not get any good pictures. At 12:30 most of the dogs were wore out so we went back to the trailer to unload the hogs, eat lunch and get the old dogs. At that point we had caught 12 hogs, the biggest was a 283lb sow. We cast the dogs and went another direction and it took about 15 minutes before we were in the hogs again. We had dogs split up in every direction the rest of the evening and ended up only catching 8 more hogs. We had caught 7 sows, 4 boars and 9 shoats that we confirmed on the first day. This is the 9 we took to the contest to weigh in on Saturday. Lil red shoat did not count. Day 2 started at what was supposed to be a small place that a guy was getting pics of alot of barrs coming to some feeders, but his feeders ran out before the last rain, so no more barrs there but they found a 125lb boar hog nearby that ran a little over a mile before they made him pay. When we got around the roads to them, the cur dogs had him squealing, and the strain was more than he could bare. So we left what was left of him there. We then hauled the cur dogs back to where we started and hunted them through the creek bottom and about .6 miles down the creek we caught a 188lb black barr. Most of the dogs rolled out and about 20 minutes later they found a spotted barr. These dogs were wore out but ran him across a pasture and down to another creek where we caught him, and he weighed 243. We tried a few more spots with no luck, so we called it a day. We go to the contest and after everyone weighs in they make me take the polygraph test, so we knew we had placed. Once the results were announced, we had won 2nd place in every category. We were disappointed that we did not try to get a couple of those chewed up ones out so we could of atleast won the stringer. Heaviest 10 Hogs was 1800 lbs, ours 1550. Heaviest Hog was 315 lbs, ours 283. Longest stringer of hogs (over 50 lbs)was 12, ours 11. We received trophies, dog food and a cut vest, and we had fun catching 23 hogs in two days. I am glad Monday finally got here, so I could go back to work to get some rest.

I wasn't at the weighbin so I'm not positive, but I beleive it was the people who put the tournament on who won first place..

I'm friends with Cole and Brian who were the winning team and Cole hosted the tournament. I think that's kinda sorry that the event organizers won their own tournament. IMO, I think that is a bad way to grow the tournament. Congrats to Team Van Dorn! Ya'll did an excellent job!

Cole wins most tournaments that he enters and has the dogs to do it anywhere. I was happy to compete against Cole and wouldn't have hunted it if he wasn't competing. I like to hunt my dogs against the best that I know of and I have hunted with all of his and have a few of them myself. If you wanna compete against beginners only then it wouldn't be a competition. If I have a comp. you can bet that I will hunt in it as well to compare my dogs to the ones who enter so I can see what's out there

I agree. I've hunted behind Cole's dogs and they are as good as the very best I've seen from anybody. When the winners pass the polygraph then that confirms fair play. Brian Robertson and Cole McVeay are my friends and I will do anything in this world to help them and support their tournament effort. Devils Advocate- when you host a brand new tournament, and you create the rules to go by, then the host has the ability to structure the tournament into their strengths. 10 hogs to be weighed in both sat and sun, alive, makes it more difficult for smaller guys or long distance guys to compete. That's going to make it hard to grow this tournament because there's fewer outfits who feel like they actually have a shot at winning.

And when the event organizers win their own tournament it makes smaller guys (like me) feel like they have a tougher chance to win. These sort of things would seem to make it difficult to grow the tournament. I'm just playing the devils advocate because I really wish the best for Cole and his tournament.

There was only one required weigh in and that was Sunday by 5 pm. Also if you had hogs that would make the weight requirement that you thought would die by Sunday you could have weighed them in at anytime. I have know Cole a long time, only hunted with him once though. He has alot of really good places that are loaded with hogs and good dogs, so it was no suprise when I found out his team won first. If this tournament is put on again next year I will hunt and hopefully have better luck.
