I just bought two pups that are half ridgeback and half dogo.  i have real high hopes for the pups as they should be long legged and good lunged, and i think that to switch the dogo out with a pit will be just as good.

Im no expert on ridgebacks or nothing but some guys around my area use full blood ridgebacks and work fine for RCD...so you might see if that would work for you.

I personally dont like mixing breeds. My friend has a pure ridgeback and I think that is all you need. He is a rough dog. Ridgebacks were breed in Africa to hunt lions. If they can handle a lion I am pretty sure they can handle a hog.

When the sun comes up in Africa the gazelle knows it must run faster than the fastest lion. The lion knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle. When the sun comes up in Africa, it doesnt matter if you are a gazelle or lion. YOU BETTER START RUNNING!!!

Your experience is in one dog that you have seen, you can't speak for the whole breed.
I have seen a pit get wrecked and quit, but does that mean pits aren't worth a darn for catchdogs?

fyi, ridgebacks are supposed to be big game bay dogs. that doesnt mean all the bad breeding hasnt changed the now american show dog into catchy ridgebacks. just like many breeds the hunt has been bred out of them for show qualities.

There is definately some truth to that, hound breeders just about ruined the Redbones and Black & Tans by focusing on the show ring! Thank God both breeds are making a come back. Now all you Red and Black Dog guys dont go hateing I'm just stateing what I believe to be true Tongue

Its funny u said that Mr. Parker... I too had a male reg. Ridgeback and he started real easy on a small hog, but as he got older the first bad hog he was on,  well I have seen weenee dogs with more guts.  He did not pan out for me either, now that dont mean there aint none out there, its just I had a dud..

Ridgebacks are supposed to be all rounders for the farm & for large game hunters. I've been told about a woman and her two ridgebacks that would catch warthogs for her & let her dispatch the warthog with a rifle while they held it by the ears. Think of them like a ridged cur - that's all they're supposed to be. Some used them as gun dogs & some used them around their livestock & families.

People hunt them both as bay and as catch now, it just depends on who you ask on any given day.

Just my .02 on what they're "supposed" to be  Cool

I've got some Ridgeback Pit puppies that will be born in mid June.  The Ridgeback is the male and he's a 11/2 and he is an unstoppable catchdog with endurance, speed, strength and size.  The female is just a breeding female.  Been through alot of cross breed dogs they all work some just better than others. This is just going to be a trail by error run.

bull arabs are the pretty much the only pure breed used over here, and they were developed from bull terrier, greyhound, english pointer. they're just insane all rounders. flat, hilly, thick, open. good noses too. everything else is a bitsa. we use everything over here. lol. pretty much most dogs are mastiff, bully type breeds crossed with running dogs, staghound, wolfhound, danes then gundog, hound types for nose. in the early days most used bull terrier blue cattle dog crosses.
