Who is content with their packs? Who is always looking to get or make better dogs in order to evolve right along with the hogs?

I have two dogs right now that if I could keep two just like them as long as wanted to hunt I would be satisfied.

I think its great to be content with your pack, but dogs get old & bad things happen from time to time. I like to always have a young dog in the making. If he cuts the mustard thats great. If he doesn't; cull. You never know when your next hard headed pup could surpass your #1 dog. Right now, I have a couple of descent dogs and a young dog that gets better with every hunt. I also have a pup or two on the way(I think ) that are out of some great dogs. 2 different litters, but one of them may be my best dog in a couple of years.

Got some pretty good dogs the kind that just always seem to get it done but always breeding for better mainly smarter!! Its easier to get bottom, nose. hunt, grit , and catch.. But brain boy thats a tough one when I say brain I mean one that will out think a hog!!! Got a couple that will do it so that what I'm looking for!!!
Had a line breed Bitch called Tity Baby that people would tell me that dog has the Devil in her I can see it!!! When she worked a hog or a cow you could just read and tell she was thinking of the next move!! Gentics a dog with a brain will start rolling off one hog to the next on his own as a pup because he new there were more hogs in the pack thats thinking ahead!!!

That is a different point to the question but a very crucial one. I retired my "old" pack this past year and while hunting those 4 "main" dogs I never thought of what would happen after running them for 9 years I would do. I brought in a couple of other dogs that never blended with those 4 and those ended up either down the road or with one of my younger cousins packs. I now have joined a few forums and am taking a different and more in depth approach to ensure I do not end up in the same predicament I found myself in a little over a year ago, Running a dog with hip dysplasia and a dog who had worn her teeth flat to her gums! I hunted those 2 dogs until they simply couldn't produce before thinking of training replacements simply because they were "top notch" in my book. I was lucky that my uncle had been keeping an eye on me and had a dog that had just shown potential and needed a home so I have a great base to build off of and my hopes are high. As far as my spot in the pack, I recently couldn't pack a pig back to the truck due to being stuck in a gulch so my spot could be in jeopardy!

I am never satisfied with my dogs. I always try to have pups coming up to "replace" the older dogs. Problem is I am never happy with the way the pups work compared to my older dogs and I sell them. Then wished I had not as I hunt with them latter and they are working like my old dogs.
I wished I would have learned from my mistakes of selling good pups and maybe I would have a pack that is close to what I want or my old dogs LOL. But that is part of the game. The search for that "perfect" dog or what you think is that perfect dog.

That is a very good point Underdog, it is our responsibility to hunt our dogs as much as we can.. Not only hunt em but put em on hogs to see that they produce to the best of their ability. In my neck of the woods, the hogs are not real thick and it takes time to produce a dog that would in other situations be outstanding in other locations. I cant tell you the amount of times I have sold dogs at the age of 2 that I would consider a started dog and sell him to a person for 200 dollars and 6 months later get a call and the man wants 5 more like the one I sold him cause he is already striking and finishing tracks.. Like a ole man told me one time, the dog cant find a monkey unless you bring him to the zoo.. If the hogs arent there, they cant invent em....

These might not be the best I have ever had but they are what I got. You cannot run them dead dogs or ones that are not there. I can catch hogs with the dogs I got.
A few years ago me and the guy I hunt with all the time had a pretty good pack of dogs but were getting a little age on them. We dang near got put completely out of the business by one really bad hog. It had happened once before when we lost our two best dogs on one hog.
I hunted a couple of weeks ago and we ran into a real bad hog and he really worked my two best dogs over and then some.
