Never seen that happen on regular round bales,  and we bale quite a bit of hay and have quite a few yotes.  now i have heard of them tearing into silage wrapped hay before.   I know it doesn't answer your question but that is just my experience.

Have seen turkey nest/roost on top of them and scratch through netwrap to build nests.
Maybe digging for eggs. Just a thought.

I have seen them sitting on top of bales when the grass gets tall hunting for mice and they lay on top of them to sun them selves etc.  I could see them trying to dig down a little and living on them.

i had the same thing this past winter them male dogs would mark them bales and scratch the net wrap off the top of the bales, they would bed up in them some too.  makes for a good vanish point is all i could figure.
