Wow... I guess those are the ffa type hogs because they look nothing like mine! They have huge hindquarters on them, don't they? Are you going to keep track of all the money you have in them? I would like to know how a homegrown hog compares to store bought price per pound. I'm not thinking of raising any eating hogs, just curious. The hog we have at the processor right now the kid had $1,000 in. Of course, that includes shavings and conditioning feed for show, etc. It will be interesting to see just what kind of money is involved in a "for slaughter" feed out vs a "for show" feed out.

Cheers

I'll be happy to give you the figures when I'm done.  5 of the 8 came from a show breeders farm.  They travel the country bringing their stock to shows.  I'm happy with them so far.  3 of the barrs are several weeks younger.  They came from a different farm.  I'm looking to get them all to the 260-280 range as far as weight goes.  The biggest is somewhere around 130#'s as of today.

Man that is gonna be a pile of meat, you are talking about having 700-800lbs of edible pork when it is all said and done.

According to my figures, when it is all said and done, from buying the hogs, worming them, feeding them, butcher fees cut and wrapped, I'm thinking it will be $2.00 - $2.30 per pound of meat.  We'll see in several more months.

Only 1 is mine.  The others belong to friends and family.  Some of them (each hog) all belong to one family, while others were split between two families.  They just reside at my place, meaning I get to feed and care for them.  I consider it a hobby, so it gives me something to do around the house.  I bought the 8 head feeder off of craigslist for a song.   I just tapped off of my kennels for the water source.  It (hog pen) is about 125' from the kennels.  I've got the dogs where when I let them out, they won't even bark at the "penned hogs".  Yet, when I drop them in the woods, they know what they are supposed to do.  I love a dog that handles.  I can't stand a dog that won't leave a caught hog alone.

Do you guys wear leather chaps this time of year?  I've never wore a pair, but they look hot.  If I could find somewhere that stayed from the 30's to the 50's year round, had a lot of wild hogs, and had plenty of free hunting land, I would move from this oven I call home.  I'm not picky though.

I must be honest.  I would never claim to be a cowboy.  I did not know what "Chinks" are, so I yahoo'd it.

Wikipedia states "Chink is a racial slur to a person of Chinese or any East Asian descent.

Chink may also mean a small crevice or opening, often referring to a weakness such as a "chink in the armor", but also in purely descriptive contexts such as a chink between two bricks, and in American slang, to "chink a cigarette" means to extinguish it after it has been partially-smoked, in order to smoke the remainder later. However, these usages are uncontroversial.

The usage of the word as an ethnic slur has sparked contemporary controversies in public and popular media."
