Best Antibotic for cuts on dogs .

  I was just sitting here wondering what is the best antibotic to use on cut from hogs ?  I have been using penicillan for years and it doesnt seem to be as effective as it use to be. I know that there system is probably getting ammune to it . I have alternated with cefilexan 500 3 times a day and that seems to be pretty effective also. But i was just wondering what some of yall use on some of the Major cuts ? ?

Well, my current cut dog was on cephilexan for the first 4 days and it wasn't touching the infection.  Called the vet and she got him on Clavamox and Baytril.  Those 2 worked really good.  The Baytril was expensive as SH**, but it sure did the job.

I have never given antibiotics for a cut unless it was BAD.  I feel like hydrotherapy and things like Furall spray have worked well for me.  Just like people if you give a dog antibiotics frequently they become ineffective and you leave the dog open to a really bad infection that no antibiotic is going to fix.  I would only give anitbiotics for wounds that went into the body cavity, anything else just treat it from the outside.

X2... hydrotherapy works wonders. I always clean the cut real well with betadine, then do the hydrotherapy once a day. I never give antibiotics unless needed. For infections from cuts, I keep a bottle of 500mg amoxicillan capsules on hand from the vet. For serious symptoms, like brucellosis, erlychia, etc... I keep a bottle of 500mg tetracycline capsules until I can get the dog in.

For u guys that use baytril is the pills or injectable I have both but vet said to only use if it was bad and forgot to ask which to use

I use Baytril on all major wounds. Go to your vet, get a script, go on-line and place an order.

Last time I went I got a script for 200 pills @ 136mg and a bottle of 20ml injectable. COst me right at $700 but I never have to go to the vet so you do the math.

Best thing about Baytril is you only have to give it once a day instead of BID or 2x a day. I've healed wounds that were infected to the bone (you could see the bone) on straight Baytril and never had a problem, all the flesh returned. These were dogs that were brought to me after their owners were too scared to bring the dogs to a vet because the infections had gotten so bad.

If you need it, 1st day injectable and follow up doses with the chewable pills. All vets have different opinions so ALWAY consult your vet Marvin... I'm just another dog guy and by no means an expert, I just know what has always worked for me.

i have had paytril eat whole in the skin where i nject it

I always start them out with Gentamiacin, then use one of the other mentioned meds for a few days or as needed.  If it isnt too bad I dont staple it or suture anymore.  I just use hydrotherapy, washing daily with saline solution, and apply iodine and wonder dust afterwards.  Heals up nicely and quickly.
