How many of ya'll let other people hunt your dogs without ya'll being there, as in "borrow your dogs"? I dont like it and dont do it for the simple fact that if something happens i want to know that I was there to do everything i could to save my dog or make the right descesion to maybe keep it alive if the worst happens. Just wondering what everyone thinks.......

I don't do it.  I don't recommend it.  I certainly don't lend mine out.  Same with my tracking equipment and firearms/bows.

Unless its a CLOSE personal friend or family......I don't borrow other peoples dogs and they don't borrow mine.  That's just the way it is.

I have two dogs out right now.  Got a call yesterday evening that my pup struck and bayed a group with some other young dogs, got one hog killed, then the pup rolled out and bayed another one by herself.  I was happy that the dog is out hunting right now, while I have some other irons in the fire.  If one of my dogs gets hurt/killed while on loan, I understand, and that is a risk I am willing to take.

Now would I let anyone come borrow my dogs? Nope.   Are there a handful of people that have in the past, and are welcome to again in the future? Yes.

Those same people are welcome to come use my trucks, trailers, tractors, horses, home, etc.  If they need them, I along with my "things" are here for them.

Bingo, if you can't accept that number 2 happens, even when you are not there, don't do it. If you can accept that number 2 happens and trust the individual, have at it.

There are only about 2 people that would be welcome to borrow my dogs, but I doubt they would ever ask. And I would not as to borrow theirs. A long time back I borrowed a good buddy's catchdog once and that was all it took.

There are a few (3) people that I trust to run my dogs. They've hunted with me enough to know the type of decisions I make and how exactly I want my dogs hunted. My only stipulations are if a dog gets hurt and your not sure you can handle it, rush to the vet and i'll cover the bill. It's better to be safe than sorry. Other than that, If it happens to them, then if would've happended to me. JMO

For me, its not that I can't accept the fact that #2 could happen when I'm not there.  Rather, its because that I know #2 can happen at any moment.....I want to be there to deal with it when it does.  For example, if a dog gets hurt so bad in the field that it may need to be put down, I'm the only one that's making that call and I can't make it if my dog is there without me.  That's just one of hundreds of examples I can think of.

Ive only let one person borrow one of my dogs and that was because he gave her to me when she got a little older than his good dogs, and i didnt have a finished dog.  He got into a hard spot and lost his finished dogs and i had to work.  The man also live right next door so it wasnt like i wasnt going to see him when i got home in the morning..  Wink

This is almost my policy to the T. Catch dogs and pups are one thing but my favorite curs and breeder are another. If number 2 happens with them, I and /or my son will be there! So don’t go inviting my older dogs hunting without inviting me! Grin
Everything I have thats worth anything is a blessing from the Lord and I dont figure he would want me to be stingy with it if a friend of mine needs it. If they treat it right they can barrow it again!

The beauty if the original question, is that there is no right or wrong answer, only personal opinions.

Quote
For example, if a dog gets hurt so bad in the field that it may need to be put down, I'm the only one that's making that call and I can't make it if my dog is there without me.

The friend of mine that is hunting two of my dogs right now, also happens to be the man I bought both dogs from. With the pup, I told him to cull as he would his own... Shocked  I figured he bred her, and he knows what his expectations are of his dogs. If she does not fit the bill of what he was looking for in that breeding, then do what needs doing.  That same person went hunting with 5 dogs yesterday, and came home with three. Wink My pup made the cut yesterday.

I would also trust him to make the right call about when to hit the vet, vs when to put one down if needed.

It's not for everyone, but it works for me.   BTW, he is about to ship 15k in heifers for me to use team sorting... If he can trust me with 15k in his cattle, I can trust him with a couple dogs.
