Something I've been thinking about a while... I looked into GPS tracking units for our business to keep stuff from being stolen. There are companies that make little waterproof units that you can track over the internet. They're not really any bigger than what's on a radio collar. Why couldn't you get one and put on a collar and track it with an iPhone or Droid or something. It would only work where you had a cell phone signal but that's not a problem at any of the places I hunt.

Good idea... You need to call Garmin and give them the idea. This would be good if you lost a dog and the battery went dead. You could still find the dog.
I want a Garmin but I'LL waint several years to wait on some much needed improvements

I turn the ringer off and put it in a Ziploc bag. I was stuck upside down in a tree without a phone and a branch stuck in my chest. Lucky someone heard me yelling.

I think they already have something similar to that on the market. I cant think of the name of it right off the top of my head. made overseas somewhere. supposed to have longer batt life and range.
I was just jokin bout huntin without my phone, i hunt mostly by my self up here in the mtns. and things can go south in a hurry, on these straight up and down ridges and rock bluffs. I never hunt without my phone, and i hope that if the occasion arrises, that i might need it i hope that i will have service Wink Grin.

tnhillbilly I sure like the Tiny loc! The range and the battery life really got my attention! Now all we need is a few guinea pigs to try some out for us before we shell out the money! Grin

I had looked into this before i bought my garmin, you really have to read the fine print, they do have the range, and the batt. life. but if im not mistakin, you have to carry around a laptop, but it does have 3d topo images. Just a little too high tech for me. I could see me trying to carry around a laptop accross these mtns. LOL Cheesy  it does have a hand held unit, but i think it just has a pointer on it.   Its been a while since i researched it, so they may have upgraded, or i might have forgot all the details. Grin

I copied this off of the tinylock website. Sounds good to me. I gave it a quick glance and Like the Boarninja said. We need some g.pigs to test this system out for us. Sounds like it could be better than GARMIN. Bottom line is Garmin needs competition so that the systems can improve. Cool

The key word is range. All the necessary functions of a dog tracker, like a treed sensor, are important, but for a hunter who uses a tracking system for his or her dogs, range is the most important factor. Also, because many hunters see their dogs as more than just a tool for hunting, but as beloved pets and family members, they would like to have a first-rate tracking system to keep tabs on them. The best trackers are the ones that give hunters the longest GPS range. Tinyloc's new Hound Finder has a new and improved GPS range that is longer than other GPS dog tracker out on the market.

This new technology, combined with radio tracking, makes the Tinyloc Hound Finder the obvious choice for hunters everywhere.

RANGE

GPS range of up to 13,6 miles (22 km) (Garmin Astro DC30 = up to 7 miles or 11 km): Employing optimized GPS technology for use with hunting dogs, our system is more reliable and has a longer range than any other GPS tracking system on the market. Radio tracking up to 35,4 miles (57 km): With built-in radio tracking in the same system, you will no longer be dependent on GPS to find your dog. This is a unique solution for dogs that have gone out of GPS range.

TREED SENSOR

A necessary feature for all raccoon and bear hunters.

DOES NOT RELY ON CELLULAR NETWORKS

Many tracking systems depend on cellular networks to pick up the signal from the transmitter. Tinyloc does not have this problem, because our system is totally independent from cellular networks or any other network-based coverage system.

BATTERY LIFE FOR GPS TRACKING AND RADIO TRACKING

You would not want the batteries to die out on you when you need them most. The batteries in the Tinyloc Hound Finder last longer than the batteries in any other GPS-based tracking system. This gives hunters and their dogs a better sense of security and more confidence in the product. Tinyloc Hound Finderr batteries last for seven days. Batteries can be recharged with regular outlet: low batteries? No problem. Just plug in the charger and charge up the batteries to full power with a regular outlet.

WATERPROOF

The Hound Finder is built to withstand rough terrain. Whether rain, snow, forest or dusty heat, the Tinyloc Hound Finder will guarantee quality and functionality in even the roughest conditions.

Those are still restricted by range. What I'm talking about you could be in Maine and track a dog in California. You have to track the unit through a computer but you would be able to do that with your iPhone or Droid.

The technology has been there for years. It has a lot to do with what the government will allow the civilian population to use I would think. That was the limiting factor for the GPS dog tracking systems to begin with. Undecided
