Dog Tracking Idea

Something I've been thinking about a while... I looked into GPS tracking units for our business to keep stuff from being stolen. There are companies that make little waterproof units that you can track over the internet. They're not really any bigger than what's on a radio collar. Why couldn't you get one and put on a collar and track it with an iPhone or Droid or something. It would only work where you had a cell phone signal but that's not a problem at any of the places I hunt.

Good idea... You need to call Garmin and give them the idea. This would be good if you lost a dog and the battery went dead. You could still find the dog.
I want a Garmin but I'LL waint several years to wait on some much needed improvements

I turn the ringer off and put it in a Ziploc bag. I was stuck upside down in a tree without a phone and a branch stuck in my chest. Lucky someone heard me yelling.

I think they already have something similar to that on the market. I cant think of the name of it right off the top of my head. made overseas somewhere. supposed to have longer batt life and range.
  I was just jokin bout huntin without my phone, i hunt mostly by my self up here in the mtns. and things can go south in a hurry, on these straight up and down ridges and rock bluffs. I never hunt without my phone, and i hope that if the occasion arrises, that i might need it i hope that i will have service .

tnhillbilly I sure like the Tiny loc! The range and the battery life really got my attention! Now all we need is a few guinea pigs to try some out for us before we shell out the money!

I had looked into this before i bought my garmin, you really have to read the fine print, they do have the range, and the batt. life. but if im not mistakin, you have to carry around a laptop, but it does have 3d topo images. Just a little too high tech for me. I could see me trying to carry around a laptop accross these mtns. LOL   it does have a hand held unit, but i think it just has a pointer on it.   Its been a while since i researched it, so they may have upgraded, or i might have forgot all the details.

I copied this off of the tinylock website. Sounds good to me. I gave it a quick glance and Like the Boarninja said. We need some g.pigs to test this system out for us. Sounds like it could be better than GARMIN. Bottom line is Garmin needs competition so that the systems can improve.

Those are still restricted by range. What I'm talking about you could be in Maine and track a dog in California. You have to track the unit through a computer but you would be able to do that with your iPhone or Droid.

The technology has been there for years. It has a lot to do with what the government will allow the civilian population to use I would think. That was the limiting factor for the GPS dog tracking systems to begin with.
