I agree with Ugly Dog 100% . A skinny dog doesnt mean it runs alot. If you cant worm and feed your dogs then give them away. Sad sight to see, for me. No reason to see a dog's spine.
I have gone to the vet one time. It cost 500 bucks. Thats alot of money to me being a young family. I sucked it up. I couldnt fix the damage myself. I am sure I could of sewed it up and hoped for the best but I am not that way. I try to have a emergency fund for my dogs. Mre times then not I have the money needed. Life happens and I sometimes pull some of that money for other things, but I build it back up asap.

Hmmmm....very touchy subject. I will try not to ruffle any feathers on this one. I think that some people are good at taking care of problems themselves and some people pay an expert to take care of it for them. The oldtimers deffinately fixed their own dogs up because vets weren't availible to everyone. Didn't mean that they didn't care for their dogs any less. The dogs that never see a vet may not always make it, but sometimes the ones who do see the vet don't make it either. Its not always about a dollar, its more about intergrity and doing what is right. If a dogs gets a gut ripped an emergency just wipped out your bank account before that.....if you cant fix it your self and cant afford a vet then the right thing to do is to put the dog down and not let it suffer. Taking care of it yourself or paying a vet to do it for you is a personal descision and i would never judge anyone for doing either.  IMO

I agree with a quote from daisydog " A dog is like a tool, I take good care of it, and dont bang it on the concrete, but if it does break I dont spend more fixing the tool than it would cost to buy a new one"

With that said there is always a time and place for the vet if you hunt enough....

I didnt get the impression that dogs that didnt go to the vet for cuts and such was the issue as much as wormy and ill kept dogs with excuses made over them.

Makes me feel kind of bad. I have a little 14 month BMC gyp that I cant get fat. She gets wormed all the time and gets extra feed daily, no fleas and such, she just stays thin.

But on the other side, on '07 and '08, I had 2 birddogs get bit by rattlers. The first cost me over $400 and the 2nd closer to $800 and I lost 'em both. Had to do some digging and juggling to do that, but I had to try.

Bobby, don't feel bad... there's a lot of young dogs like this. No matter how much you worm them or feed them, they're gonna stay skinny. It's just like a bunch of kids and teenagers, when I was growing up you could see every bone in my body... but I ate like a horse. Grin

Well it dont affect her performance none. Friday a week ago, she logged just over 20 miles in 4 hours on the Garmin up above Harper in some pretty rough country in 2 separate chases.  It just hurts my feelings to see her thin. Blade on the other hand is a easy keeper. Just different dogs and different systems.

does everyone here take their truck to the shop when it breaks down? i doubt it. same goes for dogs. some are more capable of fixing their dogs than others. some are better than most vets so why should they go to a vet?

The same can be said about mechanics!  Wink Mechanics and vets have a lot in common in my opinion!

Us too, we found an 8 month old pup dead at the sight of the bay without a cut or mark on him.
