Lock your wife in one crate and your dog in another and see who is happy to see you in 10 hours!!!

Nope its not cruel at all. Think of it more like them having their own private place to get away from the rest of the world. Give them a chew toy, make sure they had oppertunities to to clean out and do their business, and give them a safe secure place to hang out for awhile.
Never use it as a place to punish or "time-out" it should be a "good" place tp go. I leave my crates open while I am at home and my dogs use it as a place to get out of the way, they will put themselves up and take naps through out the day. I just make sure its all positive when training them to go in with a command "get in your box" the same command they get when we load up to go hunting,"get in your box" I can say it any time, anywhere in the house and they run to get in. In the beginingg they always got a treat, now only occasionally do they get a treat as a positive reinforcement to a good behavior.

I agree Uglydog, crates are life savers ,,, dogs got no business with the run of the house like theynown it. They are either at someone's side or in a crate. Cuts way down on bad behavior and ruined furniture and personal items

Put a camera on your dog and see what they do all day. They just find a cool spot and lay down. Put the crate inside and they will be happy. I am sure you do but just make sure you use the largest crate you can. Outside 90-100 degrees or inside a crate with a/c?

I agree with Krystal. I have three bulldogs that all stay in crates while i am gone. They are role models when I am home and the wreckin crew when left alone for long periods. Tiny dont feel bad about the crate I used to until I begain to notice that 75% of the time they where out of it all they did way lay around n sleep or chew on a toy. Just put them in a crate they have a little room in and give them a toy that you feel safe with them having to chew on and keep them busy for a while. I give mine cow femers or Big ham bones.
