Okay, Now that I have your attention Grin

How many of y'all on the board ran deer dogs when it was still legal in Texas?  Looking back, do you think there are any steps you could have taken to prevent the removal of deer dogging in Texas?

What will you do if Hog dogging becomes illegal in Texas, will you go continue to hunt? Will you try to convert your hog dogs to some other game?

The more of my time and money that I devote to my dogs, the more I want to make sure to keep hog dogging legal in Texas. Having not been around deer dogs when deer dogging was removed, I don't really know how they went about removing it.   Was it incremental, like taking away dogging on state land, then , limiting seasons, then all out banning?  Or was it cold turkey, one day it was no longer legal?

I have never ran deer dogs so I cant give you any answers on how things went for the deer doggers before or after the ban.

If they ever ban hog hunting with dogs then I will use my dogs to tree coon and squirrel.

Stock bred BMC’s should make fine coon/squirrel dogs huh? If they trash on a hog then I will just have to deal with it like an undersized crappie. Catch and release. Wink

Most folks are watching and waiting for it to come at you, but what most don't realize it is coming in wearing a mask, Instead of saying Hog Dogging is illegal they are attacking the small liberties one at a time to weed out al the hunters slowly but effectively.
like Breed bans.
Limit the amount of dogs you can keep,
Mandatory spay and neuter
kennel licensing
and regualting the size of kennel space
having to have the kennels match certain criteria before you are able to obtain a license, then you have to have extra homeowners insurance to cover it.

Nickle, dime and george washington you right out of hunting dogs, and you never even saw it coming

All these things are being brought up in legislation, last session and coming session,

Yes I'm old enough to remember running deer with dogs in the country where Lake Livingston is now. The last time I ran deer with dogs was behind the drive picturs show in Cleveland. My cousin Bobby and I and 2 of his freinds. The one guy shot my new Dodge pic-up with double O buck. But we got a nice 8 point out of the deal. The guy payed to have my truck fixed.

Right before they outlawed deer  hunting with dogs, they had six counties where it was still legal. They were all in the big thicket area of Texas. One year it was legal and gone the next. It continued untill the late 70's in some spots, with the area around Plum Grove being the worst. I had a Game Warden, when I lived at Spring, tell me they were afraid to try too hard to stop it, as it could be a little too dangerous. We had some Beagles that would trash every now and then and run a deer past a stand.

It is coming in Fl. You can believe it without a doubt.

Just like ugly dog said they are chipping away one right at a time.

Now you have to register deer dogs with the state. I have to register my club with the state if we run deer dogs. That number they give you has to be on a collar. They are slowly changing WMA's to no dog hunting. Most you cant have a dog for anything but birds.

They regulate you until it is not worth it and cant comply with any rules.

They will chip away S. Fl first. Then central Fl. Then N. Fl.

I have seriously kicked around the idea of something like the TDHA here in Fl.

I'm 47 now and I remember going to Diboll, Tx every Thanksgiving week to  camp in the Piney woods. We all had some dogs and some of those guys would stay down there and camp on the land owned by the paper companies for the whole season. We had a lot of fun and a lot of good memories. Met some pretty colorful characters too. I remember them dogs running the deer toward us on a drive and us standing on a logging road waiting for a shot at what was sure to be a blur of hide, hair. and hopefully horns. I don't remember seeing a lot of deer killed. But it was a SPORT that was fun.  I don't believe it was the tree huggers or anti-hunting crowd that shut the sport down in Texas. I believe the problem was the dogs couldn't read the "No Tresspassing"signs. The private landowners did not like dogs running deer on their property. They ignorantly thought if the deer were run by dogs they would leave out and they would have no deer. If that is true ,why would the deer lead the dogs in a continuous circle? Since the landowners of big acreages usually have a lot of clout in the capitol, they got what they wanted. Personally I think it was (and is still today) about control . Lease dollars, and the general money trail will lead us to the real culprits. Look at the history of hunting with dogs and you will find the lords over the land were against the good ole boys hunting on their land with dogs or any other means. Ithink if we don't put forth our utmost effort to have a good relationship with the big landowners (all landowners for that matter) we will ultimately lose the battle and the war against all hunting.

I will continue to catch hogs with dogs as long as I am physically able, whether it is legal or not. No self respecting "Cracker" would allow a law to prevent them from using dogs to work their livestock, especially on their own land.

Preacher1,, I totally agree.. It is the simple fact of life,, money makes the world go round.. Too many times our liberties are taken away because of what some "high rankin society member whispers something in the right lawmakers ear".  Then they start figurin ways to take a sport that was goin on way before their time and decide that it is better that it is done away with.. They will first say it was because of the Trespassing issues ,, then it will be that the deer are affected by all the stress,, I dont understand how men just dont respect what another feller wants to do on his property and if it dont fit what you want ,, just let it be,, dont try to impose your will because you have the money to do so..I was raised up running deer dogs with my grandfather ,, now in the last 5 yrs I have seen deer dog season pretty much cut out over in La... My kids got to enjoy it a little, but I am afraid that their kids will never be a part of something so enjoyable..

We as hunters are going to be the down fall. The reason you cant have a blood dog in East Texas is because of the deer doggers. Hunters need to shape up.

The one advantage hog hunters have is the negative financial impact feral hogs have on our local enconomies.  The same can not be said for deer....deer are considered a valuable resource.
