Public Hearing Scheduled For Harmful Jacksonville Dog Ordinance
A public hearing has been scheduled for a Jacksonville ordinance that is damaging to sporting dog owners and hobby breeders.
Ordinance 2010-527 would make a number of severely restrictive changes to the area’s dog regulations that would threaten sporting dog owners. The ordinance would regulate nearly every aspect of pet ownership in the City of Jacksonville and the surrounding Duval County.
A vote on the ordinance has been delayed several times. Council President Jack Webb has scheduled a public hearing on the ordinance for Monday, November 22 at 6:00 p.m. A final vote on the ordinance could take place the following day. The meeting will take place in City Council Chambers, 117 W. Duval Street, Jacksonville, Florida 32202.
Among the troublesome regulations for sporting dog owners included in the ordinance are:
The ordinance creates a permit system for hobby breeders and other small breeders. It would require annual inspections and costly new standards under which small breeders would have to comply.
The ordinance creates a new classification of “potentially dangerous dog.” Under the new definition a dog could be classified by the City as potentially dangerous if the dog “aggressively” chases a neighbor’s dog or cat or causes the neighbor’s dog or cat any injury. Owners of potentially dangerous dogs would be required to carry a $25,000 insurance policy, annually register the dog as potentially dangerous, and would be prohibited from tethering the dog outside.
The ordinance would generally require that all dogs caught running at large while in heat be sterilized before being returned to their owner, regardless of the circumstances.
Take Action! Sportsmen should plan to attend Monday’s public hearing and urge the City Council to oppose the ordinance. Tell them that the new regulations will have devastating effects on sporting dog owners and small hobby breeders.
Jacksonville sportsmen and sportswomen not able to attend the meeting should contact their Council member and ask them to oppose the ordinance. Click here to find your City Council member’s contact information.
