I got a video from Cary or Gary Lightsey many years back. His family were Florida ranchers and had a spot on Brahma Island where they did hog hunts. In the video he used 3 dogs he called cracker curs. i think 2 of them had bob-tails. They were fairly leggy, but pretty blocky built with block heads. They were yellow w/o much dark or white markings. looked like they could have had a little bulldog blood in there somewhere. Their hunters were shooting the boars from in front of the dogs. they would definitely put a mouth on a hog to stop it. He had a real good handle on them. good looking dogs. i think they moved their operation to another state due to urban encroachment in thier area.

They still own Brahma Island. No worries about encroachment there. It's in the middle of Lake Kissimmee. Only way to get there is by boat.

I've seen a hunt or 2 on TV with the Lightseys on Brahma Island,....it doesn't get much better than hunting on your own island seems to me. I do remember a bit about the dogs but not much.

Most of the true FL curs I've been around were indescript.... not a "type" but a "built for pupose " description.... truthfully, most true Florida curs I've seen were ugly as hell... bred down after many years of inbreeding... thinking they were "locking in traits".... .... trait's locked in and lost generations ago...

When I think of a "model" Fl cur, I see a Partin dog... the head is unmistakable.... big doe eyes, round muscled "boxy head" ... athletic body........

As with all.... just because it's a FL cur, don't mean it ain't a cull...

You will also see a lot of variation in the dogs depending on the part of the state or ranch the dogs came from.

The Fl cur can be any number of colors but most are red or yellow most have a black muzzle, and a black mouth. They also can be bobbed tailed or full most oldtimers will tell you that it is preferable that they be bobbed.   They are equally at home working cows, catching hogs or trailing deer. Some of mine have been put into service as bear dogs, have been told they hold there own with there mt. curs and hounds.
But there are culls in any breed,  the pictures you provided are good looking pups but are not what we in Fl consider a Fl cur, but that means nothing goods dogs are were you find them.

Used to go to Sebring to camp when I was a kid... grew up in Bradenton and always loved to get out that way... them old trees with the concrete repairs still there?

I remember when the state started lettin' people take hogs out of there, must've been in the 80's... I remember seein' some of the biggest hog rootin' I've ever seen in my life in that park...

What's your name?  We probably know some of the same people....

My name is Cary Hitt, they are not allowing any hunts in the park now they shoot them and bury them, its a shame they are over run with them.
Florida curdog that's a good looking pup have one that looks just like him.
