I set my trap yesterday afternoon and with the weather so nasty I didn't get toake the pups to the woods till this evening. About thirty seconds into our hunt they roll pretty deep into the woods and I hear Bonnie open on something and I just sat and listened to her bark but she quite it and they made a big loop back to me. I started out of the bottom toward my feeder where my trap was set. I can see the door shut and as I get closer I can see a nice young boar coon in the trap. He was sitting soooo still the pups never saw him. I called them over and the coon hissed and swatted one time and that was all it took. They bayed so hard I thought they were gonna pass out haha. I rolled the cage about 20yds from the tree and got the door situated where the coon could push it open and I backed up a few steps to watch it all unfold. The coon comes out and they baying and he is swatting and barking back. He makes it to the tree and the pups sat back and treed for a good while but finally lost interest. I kinda like this coon training Smiley

thats fun Matt,  i grew up with walker dogs  that would tree coon at night and tree squirrels during the day.  i had a old walker dog that ran loose at the house, when he heard the school bus stop , i would see him heading to the woods, he would be treed by the time i got to the house, i would go shoot a suirrel out and he would be treed again.   on the weekends that ole dog would be treed at daylight, i never thought much about how he new it was the weekend,,  he just knew i was at home...

You can't beat a good coon dog...ain't nearly as fun as hog hunting but it's still fun and training pups makes for some great times. Sure are looking good.   You want them for squirrels, coons, or both.

In a perfect world I would like for them to be dual purpose squirrel and coon dogs. I want to squirrel hunt in the day with them and I want to be able to ride around at night and jump coons off of cattle and deer feeders.  I have never messed with tree dogs before but all I know to do is hunt them regular and try to show them what I want them to tree when I can. They hunt hard and fast and as long as they will keep progressing on treeing and staying treed they will be alright in my book.

That is cool. Wife would kill me if I took up some tree dogs.

You're on the right track Matt, keep letting them tree a caged coon. Fix it where you can raise the cage up into a tree and let them tree it for a bit and let it back down when they start to lose interest. I think they're off to a great start and yes you can make dual purpose dogs out of them.....done it myself. Good luck.
