Depends on if you want to eat it or sell it.

I let all sows loose (remember sows make big boars and thats what i like to catch) i barr small boars and tie the big boars so i can take em to a buying station. Just what i perfer it also depends on if you have a place to keep the hog or if you have the equipment to haul the hog outa the woods.

If your gonna go through all the effort to catch the hog.....Why kill it?   If you want to kill it....Might as well just shoot it at the bay, and don't worry with the hassle of using catch dogs.  I say if you got them caught, tie em'.  Otherwise, whats the point of catching them?  Jusy my 2 cents. But to each his own.  Of course there are exceptions like when you catch one in a spot where you will never get him out, then you got to kill them.

If there is any way that we can carry the hog out I will definately tie one and pack it out.  They may not bring much individually but if you can keep them till you get a load they sure help pay for dog food and diesel for the next hunt.

Waylon,

I wish it was as easy as that, but we have very thick cover and makes it very difficult to get close enough to a hog to see it to shoot it.

Waylon,

Joey

Sometimes I am only ten feet away when I shoot a hog and allot of times In those close situations all I see is an ear or snout or front foot, then locate all the dogs either by sight or sound to know they are all clear and shoot.  Dont have to see all of the hog before I shoot just part of it and 30/30 will clear the brush out of the way as long as you shoot around the big limbs.  Some times If I get close but cant see a hog I will wait and the hog will eventually move a little and give him self away or charge out at a dog and then I will shoot.  You might have to wait a few mins but thats where all the fun is watching the dogs bay.  The best ones are when you think its one hog and you shoot it then the brush erupts and about 15 scatter every where.  What im trying to say, is there is thick stuff every where and the hogs are gonna be there no matter if its north, south, east or where ever in Texas and else where.  I know what you are saying and theres been times when I wish there was a catch dog allong as it would make things a whole lot easier in thick stuff.  But to me a catch dog is more of a hassle than a help, and my bay dogs live allot longer if they dont make a habbit of running with catch dogs.  Not that its wrong or not good to hunt with a catch dog, its just not my cup of tea to hual catch dogs.  I think its perfectly fine for other to do. Heck I Dont mind hunting with them as long as some one else brings them and leads them. Grin.  My point was if you got them caught why kill them?

I hate to stick a hog, I dont even take a knife 95% of the time. If I cant tie it and get it out, I'll just let it go. Why risk getting a bulldog killed just to end up sticking the hog? Heck, my grandma can stick a hog!   Grin

I know this is kinda deviating from the original topic but for those that do it regularly (Michael, Clint etc) how many times have you had a close call while turning a hog loose?  I had some close calls this past year doing it and I had a 180# sow grab a hold of my foot and nearly pull me out of a tree that I was jumping up in  Shocked.  Turned a good boar loose over the summer and me and Mike were ready behind a tree when Sam turned him loose and in an effort to get away Sam ran and jumped over a downed tree and nearly broke his neck (sorry Sam it was funny).
If I had my choice I would always do like I do on my private land places that I have permission to do so, I would catch and release everything except for what I wanted to kill.  I hate feeling like I have to kill a hog just because I cought it but it is what you gotta where people want the hogs gone.  Kinda makes me feel like a buffalo hunter.....

Waylon,
I hear you about leading the catch dog, that is why mine is trained to walk off lead behind me and he doesnt get out of arms reach from me.  The only time he is on a lead is if I am trying to get real close before turning him loose or after I get the hog flipped.  Another awesome product of obedience and e collar training! matt i only had two close calls this year. and both were big hogs with some cutters on em  Shocked everybody usally calls a tree and goes and stands by it and the person who turns it loose tells everybody what tree he's gonna climb. then you just ask if everybody is ready then you just let go and run like heck to your tree and you better hope he dont come after you lol  Grin

I guess I've been lucky as far as not having been "got" by a hog. I know some folks that have had close calls while turning them loose though.

I've been chased three times turning hogs loose... and seen several others put up trees. Grin
