After seeing that  thread about hogs in Ft Worth and Dallas on the Trinity river  got me to thinking (i know thats dangerous)
how many years have we been told theres 2 million hogs in texas  so i googled that and i found in short time we have had over 2 million hogs in texas since around 2007 and one report said 1.5 million in 2006

so i got to thinking about the math (no comments from the peanut gallery)  most studies  say  wild hogs farrow out 4-8 shoats  on a 1:1 sex ratio

so  for low number facts  say theres 2 million hogs  thats 1 million sows X 4 shoat 1/2 being female that 2  so we are back at 2 million
for one litter and we all know they have atleast 2 for a average , so double that 2 million and thats 4 million and that does not include the 1 million boars  we deducted from the sex ratio so te total should be 5 million

What I am getting at is this .. Heck if the  total herd has stayed at 2 million for  say 4 years  we (the hunters) keeping the population at 2 million and killing at least 2 million hogs a year
 just a thought

feed back welcome ..

or is the numbeer a big lie and the STATE OF TEXAS  has no clue how many?Huh?Huh?

As you said, the estimate for several years has been 2 million; once I heard someone speculate 3 million. But as you suggested, these estimates were and still are WAGs. A recent report on 8 studies and a google search of potential hog habitat in Texas indicated habitat to support about 2.5 million; and the average for the 8 studies were in that range as well. So far as I know that is the only report of hog numbers with any sound basis, and I am not suggesting that they provide the final correct answer. Also, the estimates of hogs taken are likely lower than the actual number; a large number, I believe, are taken without any report being made.

louisiana has more hogs than in the past but not as many as people think.louisiana folks like to kill to much and nothing lives very long (deer and hogs)Texas folks be glad you live their. I worked pipelines in east texas last winter and saw more hogs and deer in few months than id see in two years here in LA.   SAD!

Well every place that I hunt that wanted the hogs gone we made then gone there are no more!
The place's we own or lease's we work them and release them!

So I say the state is full of crap on how many hogs there are they just like to build the drama! They have never ask to come count the ones on my place nor any of the ranchers place's that I hunt! HMMMMM  Wink

to do population counts is almost impossiple, when a group give population counts it is allways a rough guess, with spot light counts, numbers killed, numbers heard, they do grid counts but its just not perfect. so many people have to get involved for a state wide amount that that number just can not be that acurate.

I saw an article the other day about these guys that hunt them from helicopter. The report was that they killed 500 in 24 hours in Franklin county Tx.. I hunt that area and there are lots of hogs there but that is a bunch of hogs.

I was told a pig shot at, or if one was considered hit from the helicoPter was considered a kill, that those numbers were normally alot smaller hn recorded
