There are some people who like to have rear dewclaws on their dogs and others who don't care. There are some breeders that clip the rear dewclaws off when the pups are very young. I have seen nothing to indicate that rear dewclaws are an indicator of working or hunting qualities in a dog. In the case of dewclaws being characteristic of a family of good dogs then there may be some meaning there but I believe that dewclaws per se don't indicate anything other than their presence. In rough terrain and brush, rear dewclaws can get torn off and cause problems.

I have never had a dog with rear dew claws but I have had several get there front ones rip off running through the woods. It slows them down and it very painful. I wouldn't want to have to worry about back ones.

I have a Plott that has rear dew claws. One of them grew around and back into the leg before I noticed it.

Some of the old timers claim dogs with back dew claws make better dogs.

Nothing at all.....Some are removed at birth to reduce sratching of the owner. Other reasons are so they don't get hung up in the woods or while in the kennal.
