I agree... A pup needs to be socialized when vey young and brought up right. It can not be allowed to act destructive or to knock kids down nor to jump up on people. Training a dog does not interfere with how it hunts if done correctly.

Pup needs to be socialized between 4 weeks to 14 weeks because this is a critcal period which determines most of it's personality.

  Agreed it sure does make it for a more enjoyable and relaxing time in the woods when one can EASILY recall ones dogs  ---you said it better then me and with much less words, LOL---

 I tend to agree with everyone that said that its not the breed it the way they are raised. But with my own experience, some breeds tend to be more high energy than other breeds. You said something about a catahoula and they are great family dogs but they are also VERY VERY high energy (in my experience). Until they turn 2, then they mature and settle down a little. We have a large catahoula that absolutely loves kids but he also wants to play rough with them. My nickname for him is "rat on acid" and at 75lbs he knocks me down. LOL  The bmc's seem to mature faster.
