So had my friend Mark come up to make a hunt this mornin'!  I'd warned him about the pace we set in the summertime... gotta catch and roll... catch and roll before that heat catches you!!!  Grin  Hit the gate at daylight, was a foggy, chilly morning... lulling a man into believin' "maybe it won't be THAT hot today"....

Well it was 91 when we quit hunting at 1:30pm and I'm still doctorin' on my Shine for heat stroke....

For our first set, I told Mark to put his dogs up on my box so we could make a round and see if we could catch or wind an easy one before hitting the bush...We typically do this not only to pic any easy ones off the edges, but as we ride around, we take note of where the dogs wind and come back to hit those spots later... good way of locating where the hogs are at that day....  but ol' Monkey(Mark informed me) considered this to be "practically cheating" and would have no part in it  Grin

HahA!! Seriously, poor Monkey was out of rythm from the start as I'd made Mark leave his truck at Mack's house so we weren't bringin' an entourage onto the rancher's property  Grin  Strange truck, my Snappa was in heat(in the same box I was askin' him to rig Monk on.... don't see why he'd be distracted....  Grin Grin)...   So I just drove to where we been hammerin' the hogs at the last few wks and we walked Monk and Spur in with Bucho in hand... made a big loop and couldn't bump anything so pulled up and headed to another side of the property...

Kicked Monk, Spur, and Scarlet out and led the expedition in towards an area we've come to call "Jurassic Park" ... to Mark's disgrin....  Grin  Got in a thousand yds and Monk pulled out.... we waited and listened for a spell... but no good...   Been around the Monk long enough to know when he pulls out he on one... Mark left his tracker at the truck so we made our way back and tracked... by that time Monk had fallen off and was headed in...

Startin' to get hot by now...  Shocked  10am, we usually done huntin' by then in the summer... but I went ahead and kicked Shine and Spinner out while Monkey was comin' out... they beat around as we waited on Mark's dog, who finally came out with blood all over his face Cheesy  Poor Monk caught him one and WE DIDN'T EVEN GO TO HIM!!!  Sad Grin

While Mark was coolin' Monk off, we eased in towards a ditch I wanted to dunk Shine and Spin in before gettin' serious... they were already perty hot from beatin' bush for 15 minutes by themselves...  comin' up on the almost dried up ditch we see this big red boar hog stand up out of the mud hole and just stare at us at about 70yds... hissed at the girls, but they didn't see him and went back into the palmettos to hunt... but BUCHO saw him REAL GOOD  Grin  .... been hesitant to turn his big ass loose on a cattle ranch, but he's got enough time under his belt now to give him his chance... Ol' Bucho rolled on.... the great white buffalo galloping towards the near sighted red boar.... oblivious to the ever closing great white about to take a big-ol-bite of seal blubber...  Grin

Well... that ol' boar finally saw him at about 5yds and HAULED ASS!!!   Leaving poor lumbering Bucho in a cloud of dust  Grin  ... OH well, he might not be the worlds greatest RCD but he's hell on a hog if one will stay still long enough for him to get aholt!!!!  Grin

So here's where it get's ugly... Shine and Spin roll in, pick up track, and roll out... hard... 10 minutes later, we see Shine backtrailing on the garmin kinda funny.... then stops... we got to her and find her in a hot, nasty, black mud wallow in the sun tryin' to cool off... but the mud was actually makin' her superheat.... not good.  Pulled out our water and started wetting her down... got her back to the truck and she went stiff... threw her in the truck and halled ass to the tank to try and cool her off better but she was in perty bad shape... she's drinking, actin' real sore/stiff/weak and I got her in the house to watch her till she comes around...

So got her cooled off and decided to keep pushin' on... Kicked Lee's Camo dog out with Shiner's son, Sawfish, to see what trouble they could get into... didn't take long... bayed a bunch of cattle up perty quick in a bay head... got 'em shocked off and sent 'em on... a hundred yds later we hear Sawfish bay up again....  Angry.... got in and the bay broke  Smiley... nother couple hundred yds away we heard squealing  Cheesy Grin  Ol' Sawfish's first hog!!!  Lil' guilt, but we all were proud for the lil' guy!!!

Lee and Lane, Camo and Sawfish... first hog for Lee's new team  Smiley

Got back to the truck and kicked the Meatheads out.. they rolled in a strand and as I was tryin' to call them out for lack of sign, Chub bayed up by herself and started crunching pigs.. takin' after the sow and catching her with Snappa in another bayhead...  Make that THREE times I've heard Chub bay now!!! She might just be on to somethin'!!!! May have to start huntin' her by herself finally!!!!

The Chub and me

'Nother grass patch hog the Meatheads piled up from the other night

Kicked the Heads out again down by Ellie's creek... not seen any good gators in it in a while...  they jumped a lil' boar hog and ran him for 10min before muggin' him... did some puppy training with him and called it a day!!!

Hot day... but a good day all the same!  Hope Shiner comes out of it.. she lookin' perty rough right now....  Sad

Thanks for comin' up Mark, hope I can get you on more hogs next time!!!  And can't wait for your description of the hunt... always way funnier than mine!!!  Grin

You the man Noah! It's a testament to your dogs and the shape they're in when you're still catching hogs in this noon heat. Hope Shine pulls through, congrats to the pups first! That's an awesome feeling!!!

Great story Noah!!!

Ole Monkey is a one dog gang!
Sounds like Sawfish is showing you something also.

One thing I noticed years ago, seems like a dog has a tougher time in the late Spring heat than if was the middle of August! Just takes them a little time to get used to it.
Hope Shiner makes a full recovery soon.

Glad y'all got into a few Noah,....hate that Shine got too hot though, but, she IS a Florida dog and I'm thinking that might be in her favor. Good luck with her.

First off I want to thank Noah for the invite to come up and hunt with him. The ranch is a pretty place and the people with us were good people.
Second, I want to say that anyone that "thinks" they are in good shape needs to go on a hunt with Noah and Lee!! I think they were finding the hogs ahead of the dogs.....they stayed that far ahead most of the time.... Grin But I DID warn Noah that my fat dogs were out of shape .......and their owner too!

I kind of think Noah set me up though..... Grin I have THREE females in heat at my house, and Monkey is a blubbering idiot right now. He gets me to leave my truck at someone elses house, and when we get to the woods he wants me to put Monkey on top of HIS dogbox, which has 1-2 females in heat in it, and have Monkey ride next to his 100 Lb male Dogo.......on top of the box that contains the females in heat!! Any of you that know Monkey know thats a recipe for disaster!!

Noah did try to put me and my dogs on hogs while it was still cool in the morning, but they have been hitting this place hard and my dogs just couldn't get a hog going. Finally Monkey pulled out and left. He was gone for the better part of an hour, by himself, and we drove closer to where I had tracked him. I started blowing my real loud whistle that I use to call my dogs out as he wasn't barking, as far as we could tell, but he was still a pretty good ways from us. He finally came out to the road we were parked on and his head, chest and shoulders were covered in blood where he had a hog caught for some time. We just couldn't hear him.........and I am one of the few that doesn't use a Garmin.

Shiner got real hot real quick, but I hope she makes a full recovery. Its not good to see a dog stagger around with no control of its back end, fall down, and not get up when its 90+ degrees and temps are rising..................

Noahs other dogs did real good but he isn't kidding about the catch and roll stuff! I gave up trying to hang with them and just walked in. I am 51 years old, wearing snake boots and a backpack that weighs about 30 lbs. There is no way I can hang with those two guys running through the woods and I will be the first to admit it. Maybe 20 years ago, but not today!

I still had a great time and hope I get invited back. Maybe Monkey and I can get on the treadmill for a couple weeks and try it again.... Grin

Thanks guys, ol' Shine seems to be pullin' out of it a bit I hope!  She was up jumpin' at the gate as I pulled in tonight... she'd not done much but sleep, puke, and diarreah since Saturday.... ended up runnin' two bags of saline through her Saturday night, she just couldn't keep anything down.  She's lost about 10-15#'s, but her chit is back solid, I'm feedin' her a lil' bit, but she's still not drinking like she should.  Still visibly dehydrated, pinch her skin and it stays in a bunch, better than yesterday though... so I think she's on the mend.

Been pourin' the heat to these older dogs the last few mnths... with hungry pups waitin' in the flanks, been pushin' these dogs to the edge to see what they can really take... just figures it would be my Shine to blow a gasket first..  Grin... always seems the ones you like the most go first... the ones you "tolerate" you can't kill if you tried  Grin

I appreciate the well wishes for my Shine, hopefully she'll be back to huntin' before long!

We'll do it again soon Mark, I just gotta survive this wk of on call and we'll make a plan!

Haha, ol' Mark's in plenty good shape to hunt with us!  He got more bottom than most of my dogs!!!  Grin

Shine's comin' around good, puttin' her water weight back on again finally.  Can't(shouldn't  Grin) hunt this wknd bein' on call, so I'll have ta wait till next wknd to see if there's any lasting effects... but she looks a hell of a lot better now than she did a few days ago...

Won't be puttin' her out for her first go at 10am in the heat again any time soon I can guarantee that!!!  Wink Grin

.... in fact I may have just become a certified night time hunter the rest of this summer!!!  Cheesy
