Lets hear about some first hand stories about what you consider to be an incredible or awesome feat by a dog (one dog, not a pack of dogs). I remember Mike's post about JP's dog running a hog for 5 hrs and finally coming to bay.....AWESOME.
I bring this up because I think I witnessed an incredible feat this weekend. The dogs struck out behind a stock tank. As we are walking in with the CD's, we think we hear a sounder so we cut the cd's loose and they catch a sow. We figure that the sounder we heard was just the curs gets rough and catching out. Well we notice one of the curs is gone and this dog is notorious for rolling out like a scalding ape after a catch if there were more hogs around. We keep loosing and picking up signal on her collar from 910-960 yds. Some of the time it shows her treed but always in the same general area. It was only our second time to hunt this ranch so we didn't know our way around very well so we tried to drive closer but just ended up wasting time. Its been probably 30 minutes by now so we decide to just start walking. We get about 200 yds out and we here her bark about once every 5-10 seconds, not steadily hammering. We sent another cur in to help tighten the bay and when that happened the bottom fell out. She had a sounder of 30-40 hogs balled up tight for about 45 minutes until we got there. Its takes a helluva a dog to work that many hogs for that long without any help IMO. Damn impressive in my book.
Lets hear some of your stories.

BoarNinja's Ray dog does that often from what I understand. It's Ok Alan, you were not bragging. I was on your behalf, since it is not in you to do so. As far as crazy stuff, I have a bluetick that bayed a hog once. Isn't that crazy? I too look forward to hearing some cool stories.

That's a neat story Cull Buck. I had my one dog rally about 30 hogs on the edge of a wheat field not too long ago, he held them for about 10 minutes til I started shooting. I'm not saying this dog did anything special but it was sure neat for me to sit and watch this rally from about 20 yards away the whole time listening to the sounds they were making.

The first hog hunt i ever got invited to go on (had just got a jam up catch dog) was with a good friend of mine. He had just bought a 10 mo. old yella male dog. We turned loose on a friends property with the guy he got the pup from. The pup jumped first and bayed then broke. The ole boy he got the pup from said he was running a deer and we told him laughing we'd never had a deer bay up. Afetr a 10 min run the pup finally bayed and as we topped a hill we saw about 250lb. boar topping the next hill. The boar run the pup in a herd of about 40 sows and shoats and he had em bayed by himself just circling them. Thats the first time i had ever heard a group rally. Man the sound and adrenaline i was hooked from then on....By the way that ole pup went on to make a pretty fair dog LOL......

Those are both impressive feats Cull Buck.. To rally that many hogs with a single dog takes some type of animal and JP's dog running that boar hog 5 hours likewise. This one time about 3 years back we were hunting some bottom-land and pastures. It was spring time and we turned out around 8 am. We were on horseback and had about 8 or 9 cur dogs down. We were in hogs from the start and abt 10am we had 5 caught and every cur dog except one rolled way across 2 more pastures to another huge block of woods. As we were leaving we could hear Big E's best old dog Roscoe baying behind us. Well after a long day and 6 more hogs caught in the second block of woods, we were making our way back right at dark. (6pm) Unbelievably Roscoe was still bayed in the same spot... He'd been on the ground for 10 hours and bayed the last 8 of it. This is just one of many I witnessed this dog... Another time we had covered a whole place catching a Barr hog and boar early but many, many miles later we were almost back to the trailer when the dogs bayed a group with 2 barr's and a big boar hog! Theses dogs had already done 20 + and after catching one off the barr's and boar. Well ol Roscoe rolled off, 3 hrs later, 2 broken bays and 3.6 miles later the ol man finally bayed the hog in town, right behind the county baseball parks his cross country Barr I've also seen big E's Girlfriend turned out at daylight start a boar hog, many, many broken bays later whether it be the same hog or not we caught a 200 # boar hog in front of her around 4 in the afternoon

My sons old dog ugly is Incredibly heat tolerant. I've heard of them but I have never seen one as heat tolerant as he is.
Example; 6 years ago August 13th. About as hot and humid as a Texas day can get, I took my son and his buddy hunting. We started at 6 that morning. Ole Ug didn't find hogs until around 9. We finally got him caught just after 4 that evening with 8 good hogs in the truck iced down. No shoats! I have seen better hog dogs and even owned a few that were better. Non of them could have pulled off a whole day like that in that kind of heat though. He was incredible that day for sure but he had many, many days like that. He was bred by Hershel Perry.

back in the 1980's this friend of mine had a red bmc that was a hog dog at 18 months old. He got him because the breeders didn't like him busting bays so he was a cull. I saw this dog keep a 275 pound plus boar shut down for a good while. The hog was sitting down protecting his jewels and wouldn't run. The dog was smoking some ham and mtn oysters... Same dog a week later bayed a large sow and when we caught her he rolled out again with 3 loud chops and then the next time you heard him he was bayed. In about an hour or so we caught 4 big hogs from the same herd with him and an airedale we were using for a catch dog. They each had an ear on the hogs. I told the kid that was helping me to catch the dog while I caught the hog and he missed and the dog went and bayed again. We finally called him off and leased him. On the way back to the truck he struck about 3 times off the leash but we didn't let him loose. He was a tight bay dog and easy to look at.
