i have noticed in the last year or so these hogs around here have been running so bad it seems like they have wings, but its the ones about 120lbs, them big hogs dont hardly run noways and bay up, when we go with a land owner and run a hog for about 4hrs they always think its a big hog for some reason i was just wondering if hogs were like this everywhere in the southern states,

Yessa... we got 'em all over where we hunt but my dogs don't even mess around try'in to bay one that size... done deal....

yea we hunt real loose baying cur dogs some of them will stand back 20 ft and bay by their selves and even if its 4 dogs they still might not catch one that will weigh 100 lbs, but they have alot of bottom and i guess the hog will give out before them and eventually bay but im thinking about crossing something to a bulldog to get some gritt and maybe stop some of these all day events

If you do cross then use long range cold nosed strike dogs with a lot of grit. Grit + lotto grit = more caught hogs and the chances of getting what you want from this cross is higher. |

yeah i think the grittier the better now days, i dont want any bay breakers, i just want some that will be sinking teeth and pulling hair instead of standing back baying a 30lb choat, i think about 3 gritty red cur dogs and alot of staple guns will put alot more hogs in the book, im just doing some thinking for the future of my hunting

I have been doing some thinking too. I have a mtn cur gyp bred to a game bred 60 pound pit bull that is leggy and agile. My plan is to dilute the pit to about 1/8 and of course 7/8s mtn cur but will adjust one way or the other as I see fit.
Also have another mtn cur gyp bred to a gritty mtn cur that is a strike dog deluxe that hunts with a running vest.
Time will tell if it is the right thing to do. I believe it is...

Hunted today with a guy I have hunted with for years and we went west of Franklin, Tx.. The dogs struck right off the bat but the hog headed toward a place we didn't have permission to hunt. We tracked them probably 1.5 miles and picked them up before they got on the wrong place.
We come back and kick them out where we originally started and they bay up close. I am thinking this is going to be easy. Before we could get to it the hog breaks and goes in yonder. It runs so far it is a little closer to another county road a couple of miles away. We get in the truck and drive around and hear them bay. Tried to get closer off of another road but that did not work.
Here we go to the bay and it is some thick stuff. The guy I was hunting with wanted to shoot the hog because he has a new bulldog and it was not with us. Anyway he takes my pistol and misses and the hog leaves the country.
On top of that the brand new Garmin quits working and we have no idea where his two dogs are. I gather my two up after about 30 minutes but we still cannot find his. I check my GPS and we are 2.2 miles from the first bay. Then a guy calls after about an hour and he has his dogs and they are 5 miles away. The young one is cut some but not real bad.
So I don't know exactly how far we ran this hog but it was along way.

This is why I don't want long winded, long running dogs....it almost never ends up with a caught hog, but often ends up with lost, stolen or injured dogs. Just my opinion...and what works for me. I do understand that y'all folks from TX and OK often have huge tracts of land to hunt consisting of hundreds or thousands of acres and a dog like that can sometimes be an asset....but just not for me. Glad y'all got you dogs back Mike. |

Glad y'all got you dogs back Mike. Firemedic, I already had a yardful of dogs that would hunt from 300 to 600 yards around me and would roll out for several miles and a hog. If I didn't see a dog in 10 minutes it was time to pull the tracker. Sometimes the dogs were bayed 3 ranches over. I loved those type of dogs but like you said... I worried about them getting shot, stolen, run over by a car, getting ate by a gator and the list goes on. Not to mention the fines for trespassing. As the land gets divided and the tracts get smaller like I have seen happen over the years the hog dogs of tomorrow will be dogs that will catch a hog right away and these dogs will require running vests. JMO |
