We have some 3 pups that are from our good female and a help dog male. We are wanting to start them on a hog but not sure if we should hobble a hog and let them run it or start them in a pen to see if they have the want to like the mom and dad. They work together as a team. Reason I say that is because they bay my cat up and stay baying till I go outside and get the cat and have to run them back to momma dog. Got any suggestion? We have started pups before in pen but they were about 10 months old. I would like to get these pups started now. See that makes a difference.

If they are baying a cat they are ready to see a pig. I would let them bay together and would bring a pig to them in surroundings they are more comfortable with. Would tie it and tease em until they get fired up and then pull it away and leave em wanting more. When they are that young be careful not to let em get banged up until you get the fire built inside em. If they don't have interest give em a few months due to different lines starting later. Good luck

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...

Like YellowBlackMask said,
Pull the pups out when they are still wanting more. As they get older let them bay a little longer. Give the command to "break", "back" or "caught hog" or whatever command you use to call the dogs off when taking the pups out of the bay.
The pups will out grow this 20 pounder pretty quick and will probably start catching so you will have to cut back on how many pups are baying and you will have to get a larger pig.
The main reason to want to start with the smaller pig is so that the pups get the confidence early on that they can win and they can stop any hog.
I wouldn't train too often or the pups will burn out. The bay pen is good to teach the young dogs how to bay and stop and keep hog bayed. Once the pups are older and faster you can get in the bay pen and make the hog break so the pups can shut it down. There are other ways but this has worked for me.

That's what I was thinking about doing Ruben. I just didn't want the pups to be straight bay pen. Thats why I wanted to ask some other ways to train. I thank you all for your comments. Hope I can find a pig now pretty soon. Want to start showing them one before they get to big.
