Yes you can but the odds are not in your favor to have the dog excel in both.
Had one, in many many years of owning these dogs. He could not reproduce himself in any pups he sired either. I figure he was a needle in a haystack

Have seen a few. But a good woods dog usually gets docked for points being to loose in a pen, or a pen dog gettin good and dead from trying to bay tight on a salty woods hog.

But everybody is now looking for rougher blood in woods including myself to stop runners. So we will see. To each their own. JMO

One time we took our woods dogs and one yard dog to a baying.  Cheesy The yard dog did great! Bayed like a champ, but one of our best woods dogs, which we  were worried about being too rough in a bay pen, coward down when he was released.  Lips Sealed He just looked around at all of the people all big eyed and wouldn't move an inch!  Cheesy  That dog is still our number 2 dog in the woods.  Needless to say, that was our only bay pen comp. experience.  Grin

Have seen that a few times at bay pens Dinah. A smart ole woods dog will do it every time. I have seen a few woods dogs that will straight up catch in a pen also.
I know a few that will do it both well though. Wormy has a few that will sure enough get it done in the woods and I have won a little money off those same dogs in the Calcutta's.
HogzGoneWild had a dog name Lilly. She was hard to beat in the pen and she would sure enough find a bay hogs in the woods.
I don't do much pen work so I can tell you how it's done. I just know a few dogs that can do it all and are pretty good at both. They may be exceptions but I can't really say.

I was invited by a friend one time about 4years ago to a bayen in Texas and i took 2 of my best woods dogs not knowing anything about bayen's.  I sat and watch for a while and notice that they don't put there mouth on a hog.  I was really getting nervous because people where telling me about getting docked points and almost frouned apon if they catch.  I wanted to ask for my money back but i figured oh well.  I drew one of the biggest hogs in the bayen turned them lose and they bay up solid on that big boar.  Had him in the middle of the pen and wouldn't let him move.  they where working him back in forth with all focus on the hog.  I couln't believe what i was seeing.  About half into it my male nip him on the nose and back up while all at once together my female jumped over him grabbed his nuts and sat down as my male grabbed a ear.  He couldn't shake them off.  I spoke with a guy after the bayen (Bill Huff) from Canton and he told me i had a perfect score going so far with dogs fully focused and specailly keeping him in the middle of the pen.  ANyways i think they can do both but like Yellow BlackMouth said i think they will for sure do one or the other better.  Good luck to you.  I think pen bayen's spoil woods dogs JMO.

An old man told me once......"Some of the best woods dogs can be some of the worst pen dogs and some of your best pen dogs can be some of your worst woods dogs."
