I live here in  southeastern oklahoma and everybody I know uses bulldogs or something with bulldog in the mix. And then i read where people use staghounds to catch and I am wondering why is that. The stag hound is much taller than the bulldog and it would seem to be in a disadvantage being tall than the bulldog. just wanting to hear the goods and bad of use the bulldog vs the stag hound.

heres how i see it, i ran a very big bull dog very catchy i knew once hes on a break stick is used to get him off, bad thing is he would always get hit or cut somewhere ive never had a hunt where he didnt. stags on the other hand do have height so they are really out of the strike area when they bite cause they are more nimble so to speak. thats why i would love to have one to see how it works out

It appears to me the stags are used in more open territory where they can "open" up and stretch their legs on a runner, like a runnin catch dog from he11...

We use stags here in sw OK for coyotes. Me and my cuz have 5 stags and hopefully a litter on the way. Stags r good dogs for hogs but lack the bite strength a bulldog has. They r fast as lightening but if u have one u better get two cuz a hard hit from a hog will knock one off.

Why do we use them here -

temperament
speed
nose (yep they can be good)
hardiness
holding "style" (they seem to learn to stay away from the pointy bits better than others when catching)

cheers

No a stag can't do it by itself. Takes 3-4 to keep from getting em hurt. This one is 6 months.

stag guys dont get mad but i hunt by myself and dont carry a gun and alot of times not even a knife so when it comes to a bull dog or a stag theres no question for me... i want to know when i reach in there on that boar my dog has ahold... bull dogs all the way... p.s. i'd take a cur over them any day as well    Wink

I agree get low. They're perfect coyote dogs. Not a fan of em on hogs unless its 3 or 4 of em there. Still don't like em for hogs. And I've ran em all my life.

What happens if that bulldog is on a big enough hog he has all four feet off the ground. Im not a stag guy, although I would like to have one, Im worse... a dogo guy  Grin . But just wondering? I have seen some stags and crosses of hold some big rank sob's ones that would use a pit bull as a fashion statement as they turned to hook you or ran away through the woods.

I love a good cd no matter what the breed and think that all the catching breeds have their place in a pack if you hunt all types of hogs and terrain.

i guess i'm just a pit guy... i think the more that pig whoops them the harder they fight... luickly i havent crossed any that the bulldog and a couple curs couldnt handle(by no ways saying there isn't plenty of pigs that would make me eat my words) i like cur crosses but i hate catch dog crosses maybe its just being hard headed and believing pits and curs is the best way

I agree...you have to have the jaw power. I wouldn't want to rely on a stag to have a hold in a tight area with me getting into it and not be able to move around and the boar is in excess of 200 pounds.

APBT all the way! Nothing hits harder or is as game as a good APBT! A buddy of mine in Wyoming runs stag hounds and greyhound for coyote. Three years ago he crossed a pitbull dog with one of his greyhounds and he uses it as his "kill" dog. He said he hasn't had near as many dogs get hurt since he has started using that pitbull greyhound cross.
