Fellas, i just moved to TX from LA. I need to get my truck re-registered in TX and they are telling me I need to go get a TX inspection sticker first. The question i have is will they reject my truck for not having a muffler? Its a diesel by the way... any help would be appreciated.

What year is it? Everything depends on the year. My truck is only a safety check. Don't go to the big name shops. They hire stupid mechanics that just started. Go to the little shops with a mechanic that has been doing it for years. You can go in and ask them what is needed. That way you can know before you have to pay.

you dont have to have an inspection sticker to register a vehicle. you do have to have a registration sticker to get an inspection sticker. a La inspection ticker is valid in Texas. I dont know who told you that you have to have an inspection sticker to register a vehicle, but they are wrong.

ok i was wrong. i have been a police officer for 11 years and didnt know this. if you move to texas you have to re-inspect it in texas prior to registration. if you are a texas resident and buy a vehicle out of state, e.i. shreveport, and that state issues an inspection sticker, you dont have to re-inspect it until that inspection sticker expires. makes no since, but this is the government.

Find a station that understand this, and you might luck out.

I live in texas and bought a truck in texarkana... i had to have it re-inspected in texas before i could have it registered, even though it was still current in LA...

In harris county they will put it on the computer and test for emissions doubt it will pass that with a straight pipe aside from to loud and a few other things. Make sure it's right when you take it in because they charge u pass or fail. I'd do some checking with the state office so you know the rules and regs

Look... What I would do is keep the same lic and if anybody says anything. Tell them you own two houses one in tx and one in la. Tell them your job keeps you going back and forth each month....then you won't have to change it over...

Find an old run down shop in the sticks. When I pull into the one 2 miles from my house he says "honk the horn", I do and he starts filling out a sticker. I drop him a $20 for his time and I'm on my way.

Here in my lil town there's a lil place that does inspection and  oil changes. They just tell me to honk the horn and they check all the lights and that's it...its about where u go. Usually small stations family owned are your best bet.
