I give all my dogs ivermectin monthly. Today I gave them all their doses same as always and then turned around to feed them. One of my yearling males was sulking and trying to vomit. He is usually yanking on the chain at feeding time. I put down the food and he is still sulking in the corner. I have never seen this reaction before. He received 0.5 ml orally. He is a leopard/tick cross. Any ideas what may have happened?

I used to use it every month. I talked to my vet and she said it is fine just a major over dose of ivermectin (the main ingredient in heartguard) But she did say that some dogs do not talk to "overdose" so well, and that a dog can take it fine for years, but if one day something if "off" then it will negatively affect them. She didnt say exactly what it does but she said it can kill them. something with the barrier between the brain and the body fluids?!?!?

Are you mixing it with anything or giving it straight up? Ivemectin can be real hard on a dog if giving straight.

wine6978-you're right about overdose and the deadly outcomes but this dosage seems pretty common for body weight but yeah it hit him hard today.

Yes straight .05 ml on some white bread then fed it. I have a gyp who is lighter then him and gets the same amount. She has/had no ill effects.

He literally showed sickness within 30 seconds.
He is just laying down like he is sick but at least stands up when I call him but still won't even walk towards me.

Should I use half the dosage in the future? I really don't think he is going to die since he is still laying with his head up but I have never seen this before.

I have 6 dogs and they all get the ivermectin.

What exactly are you using... the 1% solution for cattle/swine? It's not out of date is it?

That's strange, never had a problem or heard of any problems with such a low dosage.

I use .10ml per 10lbs. So .5ml for a 50lb dog and 1ml for a 100lb dog.

ml is the same as cc
