How about pictures of a dog/s in poor condition? And by this I mean way to thin or way to fat,

The problem with this is that everyone has different ideas of what a dog in working condition looks like.

How many times have you seen folks on the boards comment on others dogs being poor and under weight? When they're in perfect shape. Wink

I can't remember how many new people i've hunted with over the years whose dogs were way over weight and out of shape, yet they thought they were in perfect shape.

After a long hunt, dogs draw up and look like crap... then you have folks bashing them cause their dogs are poor. I know mine look pitiful after running 20 plus miles two or three days in a row.

Then, the general public thinks dogs in good working condition are starved to death.

That's why it's best folks keep their comments to themselves based on a picture. Wink

Does it count if I put em in the back and drive thru the carwash.  Jk. I agree and will admit that my dogs need a bath. But everytime we rinse em off they plop in the dirt. So I put big tubs by em so they can jump in when they want. Helps with cooling in the summertoo

I have looked at all your posts on ETHD and other sites.  I don't see where you hunt.  Until you spend some time in the field, behind a dog, actually hunting, you cannot know its condition.

My thoughts are that if I want someone who can recite blood lines, I'll ask you.  If I want an opinion on the health or well being of a dog, I'll not get it from a picture.  But rather go see the dog.  Or better yet, arrange to hunt behind the dog.  And until you have actually been to someone's property, you do not know how they kennel/keep their dogs.  Its heresay and uninformed opinion.  You should keep that to yourself.  Just my thoughts.

Picture 1:  Way too skinny!

Picture 2:  Way too fat!

Oh, picture 1, the way too skinny guy was Haile Gebrselassie.  He holds the two fastest Marathon times ever recorded.

Picture 2, the too fat guy.  That's Zydrunas Savickas, 2009 and 2010 World's Strongest Man.

Rather than pop off about something you see in a picture, maybe get some facts.

I agree about ceratian aspects of judging from a picture.

However how can you justify pictures of dogs standing in 3" their own crap?
Dogs in the kennel where the water is has more green than john deere?
Then the dogs are in poor condition on top of that?
Well you know they say a picture is worth a thousand words and its not just 100 or so hunting dog people on this sight daily its a million a month, so who gets the wrong impression?
Thats right those that are judging us and what we do with our dogs off of their first sight or picture you post on this forum, and I believe thats what OLY is talking about.
Not the obvious pictures that the moderators have to remove or send you a message to remove because "somebody did not think" hes talking about getting a clue of taking care of your dog and all of us Policing ourselves to prevent anymore Animal Rights activist having anymore ammunition to use against us.

Oh by the way HB 1451 was signed into law,

 Thanks Krystal that’s EXACTLY what I was trying to say, maybe I failed in words???  Even though it seems everyone but one got the point---

---I believe to those who have experience AND SOME SENSE it is obvious what a dog in good condition looks like because we have seen them plenty, a dog with good muscle tone even though he may look thin is a dog in good shape, its dogs that look thin and lack a good strong and obvious muscle tone that I have issues with.

---Madshark--- WHY THE HOSTILITY?Huh?  You do not know me, I do not know you.

 Even though I do not want to waste my time on a reply to you IF the tone of your post is as I read it, I WILL.

  I do not come here to fight and or argue with anyone, I AM DONE WITH THAT; I come here to read, learn and speak with friends I have made through the YEARS.  I state my thoughts and RESPECT the thoughts of others, IF I do not agree with them--- I either STAY OFF THEIR THREADS or state my opinion/thoughts in the most RESPECTFUL and CORDIAL manner I know how.

  I do not appreciate your tone and believe you to speak off BOTH sides of your mouth, first you talk about not talking of what one has not seen with ones owns eyes and then you go talking about me not hunting, have you ever gone hunting with me??? When was this thread about ME personally???

 This thread was ALL ABOUT proper dog care and the fact that, it’s IMPORTANT to THINK and remember that the Anti’s are watching our every step and we MUST think about our dogs and fellow dog owner and hunters when we post pictures---

I am going to tell you this much, I HUNT, I HUNT real hard and hunt the resources I have which are not as much as the ones y’all have in Texas--- I do not consider myself and EXPERT hunter, matter fact I am a DOG person FIRST and a hog hunter second, I do not have the best hunting dogs in the world either ---BUT--- I do know a lot about dog/animal husbandry and I KNOW proper care of animals and I KNOW a poor dog when I see one and I for sure know a dog in tip top shape when I see him/her as well and will tip my hat off to his owner right away..

--- YES--- you are right I KNOW bloodlines, I can recite Dogo’s that interest me and know their parents back 10+ generations sometimes, I STUDY bloodlines I enjoy that, I also enjoy LEARNING how to take PROPER care of my dogs how to medicate them accordingly and all that FUN stuff that comes from owning animals, I KNOW how to get the BEST out of my dogs in the field and I KNOW what GOOD condition is and looks like.

 IF I knew then what I know now, I would go to Vet school and specialize in DOGS.

By the way it is OBVIUS that Haile Gebrselassie is in TIP top shape FOR A MARATHONE RUNNER he doesn’t look thin at all I am sure he has NEVER missed a meal and his muscle tone can attest to that fact--- he would NOT have accomplished a single thing without proper nutrition, health care and training, dogs are no different.    Zydrunas Savickas is ALSO in excellent condition for the sport he specializes in he doesn’t need endurance or speed he doesn’t need to be built like Haile    ----NOW----;

This is Georges Saint-Pierre (22-2-0) the UFC welter weight Champion ----IF I was to compare our hunting dogs with an athlete it would be him, WHY?Huh? because not only does he need to have the endurance/Stamina and speed of a MARATHONE RUNNER he also needs the power and strength OF A FIGHTER, our dogs FIND, CHASE and CATCH (fight) dangerous large game ---Hence a good balance of all these qualities must be met---

Anyway here is one fat sow we caught in a trip to LA, that’s my buddy on the sow his very first hunt;

This one was in West Florida;

A few Dogos I have breed out of my culls;

This is Gauchita at 7 months I sent her to my friend Daniel in Texas;

And my little Catahoula bulldog this past weekend by the time we got out the temp was 98° heat index 102°F, I have him trained to come to me when called so I can cool him off with the water I carry out of my camel back.  I hunt for my dog’s enjoyment and then mine;

To the rest I apologize so winded Sad Sad.

This is a Lacy owned by forum member Draggin Weight and a  SUPERB looking animal IMPO, looking at the muscle tone on her shoulders and posteriors it is obvious she is worked but well feed, EXCELLENT bones to and clean and well kept animal---

Since it turned into a conditioning thread---- THOUGHTS???

She looks fit...

If she is worm free and eats as much as she wants at least once a day, from a high quality dpg food and if she doesn't have an illness that is keeping her thin... then I would have to say she is in tip top shape...She is a nice looking dog and she looks like she can hunt hard all day or night. You have COMPLETLY missed the point.

OK, I am out of this, it was NOT my intention to RUFFLE any feathers, the ENTIRE reason for my post was not WHO'S dogs is in WHAT shape----the intent was to make folks THINK and LOOK at the pictures they post and ask themselves;

AM I GIVING AMMO TO THE ANTI's?

And further more

By posting X or Y picture and I going to make it HARDER for my fellow dog owner, hunter?

Does my dog look presentable to the un-educated eye?

Truth is we are all in this TOGETHER and we should be thinking about how WE can cause problems to the next fellow.

My post had NO ONE person in thought, it was AS I THOUGHT a good way to be a positive contributer.

A significant amount of observations on a few pictures I had seen in this forum and others I frequent triggered the thought  and post, all the intent of this post was to see what others thought and maybe as Krystal said help the younger hunters notice and take notes and even the older hunter who maybe have forgotten about these things.

Like I said this is my last post to this thread, I apologize if anyone felt it was PERSONAL to them, I ASSURE YOU---IT WASN’T.

I will however ALWAYS talk about these things because I do consider them important.

I started this yr taking my dogs a bath after a hunt. I would leave them on the truck and 1 by 1 bath them with down soap on the tailgate before going in the yard and kennel. I did this to kill all the fleas and stuff.
