We have had an extremely rough 3 weeks, we have went from catching nothing / little squirts to catching everything with attitude and needless to say 85% of our kennel is a recovery ward at this point to some extent....even the little female that never gets hurt come home with a bruiser.

Any how, my Nitro dog was one of the worst and absolutely has me stumped.  He had his scrotum cut and had one of his testicles hanging.  I was very meticulous in cleaning it up and putting it back "properly" to try to avoid any circulation loss by putting it in backwards or twisted, yet allowing it to drain if need be....I won't lie that it had crossed my mind to just 'cut him' and move on but never did it to a dog before so wasnt sure how to proceed.  I put him on Penicillan and Rymadiluntil I could get to my supply of Baytril.

He isnt holding fluid but his scrotum is the size of a Pepsi can  Undecided  I am concerned but I am thinking it may be swelling from trauma?  I honestly am not sure and thought I would ask if anyone else had ran into this before, if he isnt better in the next day or so he is most likely going to the vet.

I had a dog several months back had the exact same thing happen. I took him straight to the vet and I was told a cut in that spot was nothing to mess with. Its very dangerous. The vet wanted to cut him but after we talked about it said he would try to save them. He pulled through but under the close watch of the vet for a week. His testicles were swollen for a couple weeks but I would take him to the vet.

I would go on and take him to the vet. JMO. Never had it happen myself I run female dogs only but if he is worth the money get him to a vet ASAP. Hogs carry bacteria in the mouth prolly has a bad infection. Like I said JMO

Scrotum is a funny bag o tricks, a lil trauma and it'll swell like the dickins!,,,,,,,
Allotta those type o wounds have to be drained and really watched, heavy duty antibiotics etc, probably best to take em to the vet

Had this happen last summer; stapled it back in as you did. No problems until a few weeks ago it swole up again. I had him neutered.
Also my Bug chewed and licked at his which I believe contributed to excessive swelling; had to buy a cone to put on him both times to let the wounds heal. Vet said there was a good amount of scar tissue when he neutered him. He's almost healed and acts 100% . Hope your dog heals well and the outcome is better than mine. Well wishes to the rest of yalls pack as well.

ps. I used Dexamethasone for inflammation initially, and Cephalexin for infection.
It healed well but was always easily irritated.

Best of Luck!

Catchin hogs on the reg

Had it happen to a catchdog during tournament weekend.  We put everything back in and washed it all with saline solution and water.  Sutured the sack back together with a small opening at the top and bottom for water to enter and drain.  He was given Penicillin for 3 days (3cc, 2cc, 1cc) as well as a Penicillin drip directly into the wound, and flushed with running water twice a day everyday for two weeks.  The dog was good catching hogs again in 4-5 weeks, it was amazing how quickly he healed.

The testicles did swell quite a bit but that was to be expected.  If they look infected in any way I would get him to a vet immediately, I agree with the others that an infection in that area is nothing to mess with.

Mondo is all hog dog but half the dog he used to be. Yes I got the holding job. He took it better than I would have. Saw him today, was fat and happy. Your story sounds very familiar to our past month or two.

Baytril asap and dex.  Should have cut the one that was hanging in my opinion. Never on a hog but seen it on I guess he caught it on a fence they cut the one hanging and sewed it back up and if I remember right he sired a litter after it.  I was young young but remember some.

I am probably one of the most anal retentive people about drainage and infection, it is draining fine and I do not believe its infected because I can smell infection like no body's business (my nose is my worst enemy).  I looked for any sign of puncture before I put him back together and it just looks as if someone slit it like you would a hog and fell out with no trauma to the actual testicle its self.

I am just stumped that it is staying swollen like it is, I am not above admitting when I am over my head and if I had thought for a minute it would have stayed like this he would have already been to the vet.  I was just curious to see how others have addressed it in the past.

Where can I get the Dex from - is that vet prescribed?

Thanks all.

If it happened to me I would just ask that someone go ahead and put me out of my misery. Already upset that I can't lick them. That would just be adding pain to insult.

Lmao I nearly fell out of the chair bobcat.  But yes dex is vet required but is easy to get one from a horse person or just tell the vet what you do who you are etc etc and they will usually give it to you.  It is not overly regulated.

We had that happen to our best dog a year ago. James just cleaned it up real good, put it back in the sack, stappled it up and then he went and bayed another hog that night. The next day it swoll up pretty good so i started him on pennicillian and a few days after that I went to check on him and the swelling was gone and he had chewed the stapples out. Now there isn't even much of a scar.

Oh yea, and we got a litter of puppies out of him afterwards.  Grin

if it was me i would move on and clip em, no sense in risking infection even with meds pumping he could still get a infection

I cant say i had mine cut open by a hog, but when i had my vasectamy, just from the little 1" cuts they made, mine swole up like a grapefruit. so i would assume that the trauma would be close to the same but with more injury having the sack tore open instead of a nice surgical cut. im with every1 else, VET ASAP.

Ashley, you should be able to get dex from Doc Harvey or Bryant in Okeechobee no problem. If they know you all you have to do is call em and they will make a prescription to pic up Wink

I called and left a message for them but its getting past the girls up front that is the trick Evil, my mom went to school with Dr Harvey at ABAC and him/Dr Bryant have always taken care of our horses and a few late night calls....we used to be able to call and get pretty much anything we needed but now they want them brought in for everything but I have another source checking for me.

Thx
