After picking up the lil John boat from my late pawpaws house yesterday, I love it and have serious plans for it, BUT I now have this insatiable itch to build a pontoon. My good buddy josh knows where a couple pontoons are at and im gonna make a cash offer or trade a sks for them, but I will need to build a frame.

I've dont know how to weld very good and definitely dont know jack about welding aluminum so would I be ok with a lightweight steel frame and plywood deck?

Also, the pontoon will be exclusively for hunting hogs and gators, any setup ideas and or pics would be appreciated

Me and a friend built one out of 55 gallon drums for bow fishing. Pontoons make it easier. Sorry don't have picks but we were using what we could get free. We used square tubing and pipes to hold the pontoons together. Then used angle iron to hold the plywood. We were proud of our rust pile until the barrels broke apart. Pontoons remove that.

steel will work, but why weld it? why not shoot rivits in it? with shooting rivits you can drill them out and modify during the build. also, remember, its better to measure 2-3x and only cut once. it saves on material. good luck and post some pics during your build. oh and welding aluminu aint hard, just need a wire welder with aluminum wire and agron/co2 mix gas.

dont know why I didn't think of rivets Huh? I use them suckers on everything else in life!

Taylor, thanks, I may still need your help as im a crappy mechanic and I like that profile pic Wink im still working like crazy but soon my friend, it will be on.

Also, I have a spare 14 foot flat bottom that washed up during Ike. Im thinking about riveting the pontoons under or to the side of that, what do yall think? My idea is to mount them slightly off side of the boat hull to widen it then deck the top with plywood like and doors. It could be storage and a live well. I've got a 50 horse evinrude, with that setup, could i burn up the Brazos and maybe pull a kneeboard!?!

You could pop rivit it instead of tack welding to get your set up. Then weld it up. The thing I wanted to do on mine was have an expanded metal section so I could look down. We just did not have any laying around.

any time you use two dis-similar meatals, you have to worry about rapid oxidation. steel on aluminum or vise-versa will cause corrosion on a more rapid scale than using a single type of metal. we have this issue in aviation. the two different metals have to be primed with an epxoy primer before mating the 2 metals together.

if the feds are looking for me, they are doing a pi$$ poor job of it. iv had my phone on all day, it has a gps tracker in it and been on the forum a couple times today and made calls. i know they have the technology to track me, but i also dont live in ok, i live in tx and if the feds get offended by mmy posts, then that means they are part of the problem. they took an oath to defend, protect and serve the government, just as i did when i was in the military. i swore to defend against ALL enemies, forgien and DOMESTIC. rite now our government if the enemy. my way of thinking is, that if they dont like me, they should kill their selves, and if they cant do it, i will oblige them and help them pull the trigger. but, thanks for the concern. if you need any more info or advise, i can email you the 204 series manuals we use to assist us in proper acft (aircraft) repairs and miantenance. it explains rivit edge distance, metal prep, welding and a lot of other stuff you may find interesting. let me know. if over the phone would be better,, you can pm me your number and i will call you and guide you through some of your questions you may have.
