I have never heard that any knife was illegal to carry in TX until a few minutes ago when a Houston cop asked me why I had a big knife on my dashboard, and told me that I couldn't carry it. Is he full of crap?

No I wasn't in trouble, he is one of my customers.

Texas
Summary: Folders under 5.5" OK.
Max length: 5.5"
Specifically illegal: Switchblade, throwing knives, daggers (in general), bowie knives, swords and spears.
Relevant laws: Penal Code 46
Quirks: The one state people associate with Bowie knives explicitly forbids them.

Dang! Thanks. I guess its legal to carry them on private property? How can my local feed store sell me a knife that's illegal to transport in Texas, that's like them hippie smoke shops selling bongs that if you get pulled over with are also a big no no.

He was nice a heck about it, he actually joked about needing a big knife to make me feel manly and even laughed when I turned the joke on his taser and gun Cheesy

So that is not specific on the fixed blade length, right?  and if so it could be open to interpretation right?

Your kitchen knife is illegal to carry. The key to it is carry. If it is on your dash you are not carrying it. A guy I knew was arrested for it but the judge threw it out and fussed at the cop. You just need a reason to carry it. They don't want everyone walking around with large knifes. My dad's old lawyer was an ex-cop and said "you might beat the wrap but you ain't gonna beat the ride. So when they say you are under arrest stop talking and ask for a lawyer. Because what you say can only be used against you after that." If a cop says you are going to jail for a hog knife he is just plain harrasing you. Most likely just wants to look for something else illegal and arresting you gives them a chance to search everything. Know you T-Bob that is why you never knew that because you are a good guy and it is plain to see. But you shady looking guys better hide your knife. There is no concealed weapon law in Texas. It is either a legal weapon or it is illegal. If you have a concealed handgun permit you know where you stand. But if you do not have the permit it does not matter if you have the pistol concealed or not the charge is the same. If you are a straight up guy or gal you have little to worry about even if some cop harrases you.

"But if you do not have the permit it does not matter if you have the pistol concealed or not the charge is the same."  That's actually wrong.  If you are not a convicted felon, you can carry a concealed handgun inside of your vehicle whether you have a permit or not.  Also the idea that a police officer arrests you for the knife just to look for something else could only be true when it comes to searching a person, not a vehicle.....the laws changed a few years back when it comes to searching vehicles incident to arrest.

Your kitchen knife is illegal to carry. The key to it is carry. If it is on your dash you are not carrying it. A guy I knew was arrested for it but the judge threw it out and fussed at the cop. A person commits an offense of unlawfully carrying a weapon if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries a handgun on or about his or her person unless the person is on one’s own premise or premises under the person’s control or inside of or directly en route to a motor vehicle that is owned by the person or under the person’s control.

It is unlawful to intentionally, knowingly or recklessly carry on or about one’s person a handgun in a motor vehicle if the handgun is in plain view or the person is engaged in criminal activity (other than a misdemeanor traffic violation), prohibited by law from possessing a firearm or is a member of a street gang.

This might clear up some confusion about carrying a concealed handgun in Texas.

I have spoken to plenty of officers who aren't even clear on these laws.....that's what happens when they don't pay attention in legal update classes!

But the knife is about on the person or they could not sell a butcher knife. If the knife is the only thing you have any judge will toss that out. Now the bad guys carry guns.
