First thing you got to do is see if he will catch lol. I would start him in a pen with other dogs and see whAt he does. Discontinue use of him after puppy canines are gone. At 9-10 months, maybe later depending on your preference. Get him catching lead in a couple times and build his confidence. Then you basically find the right gear for him and start running him with the curs. In my opinion, I would keep it with short range dogs until he has alot of experience. But first thing is first, see if he will catch.
Another trick I use, if I ain't hunting him then I condition him. Being caught on a hog for a while takes alot more out of a dog than being bayed for a while. Only off days are days before hunts. So if you hunt weekends. Run the crap out of him every day but Friday. If he hunts really hard and catches alot of pigs or gets in a long race, you can give him the day after off also. During the cold months if your hunting four days a week or so, then that's enough conditioning also.
Conditioning my rcd/fh has deffinetly helped him stay alive in warm months when we don't hunt as much. When I say condition I don't mean a walk in the park either. Get in you truck and drive with him on the ground.

One thing that is important to me, once the dog is on pigs good, is trash breaking or more specifically cow breaking. A rcd that catches a cow can bring a whole new level to "bad hunt"

I would make sure you have a jam up cd to make sure you can back them up. If one gets cut down, or may e you get on a monster and they both or one decides it/they want to be a bay dog all of a sudden, you better have somethin that you know will go lock down no matter what. You don't ever want to leave your dogs hangin, it happens sometimes, but you want to cut the chances down as much as possible. That ridge/pit has a good chance of bein strait catch, but I would get some lead in for back up until they really prove themselves. A fresh dog caught on the other side can be the difference in a bad and good hunt.
And yes, like the others have said, trash break!!!! Lol

A question only - please don't take offense as I'm only trying to help.
Just curious as to why you are interested in running RCD's if you don't have much experience?
Are you prepared for vet bills and are you experienced in administering first aid to your dogs no matter what time of day? Sewing, stapling, stopping blood flow, etc?
Do you have a vet that will respond in the middle of the night, holidays and weekends?
I am in no way, shape or form bashing RCD's - just trying to make sure you know what you are getting into as you could potentially go through a lot of dogs or $$$.

I dont think that RCD if hunted properly necessarily means more vet bills. no more so than any other catch dog. I would never run only one. Lots of things come into play with rcd's. How do you hunt? Walk? wheeler? Horseback? terrain? how quick will you be able to get to the dogs when they are caught?

i have some experience not alot but then again my dad is a vet and i am in the process of becoming a vet myself so i am perfectly ready for anythig=ng this sport can through at me. and the reason i was wanting to hunt a rcd was because one of my buddies that i have hunted with runs all rcd and i like the way they hunt. and most of the time i hunt on a 4 wheeler and can get to the dogs fairly quickly. no harm done just a question

Awesome lookin pup! Good luck with him. I put mine on his first hog at a week over four months. Put him on a pig a little bigger than him with a couple of rough bay dogs. Held him back to get him worked up while the other dogs worked the pig, sent him in and that was that. Pulled all his puppy teeth and now it's just waitin till they are set. I'll get him goin again at 9+ months.
Keep us informed on how he does.
