Back when I was a young man, I had poultry.  Eventually, I worked my way into gamefowl.  I just like them.  Through the years I have tried to keep a few nice birds around.  This past season, I decided to get rid of everything on my yard, and get some nice quality fowl.  I sent off for some chicks from a gentlemen in Texas.  A friend and I went partners on them.  I also had some hens from Kentucky and North Carolina sent in.  In the past 8 months, I have had about 300 gamebirds and chicks come through my property.  That doesn't include the 1500 bobwhite and 400 guinea keets that left my place.  With the little children on our place taking priority, I decided to cull down to just a select few that I could have around the kennels.  I made my last cull for the year on my birds over the weekend.  These are the 2 stags I kept back to raise to maturity.  They were hatched the last week in March.

This stag is a Sweater cock x Gilmore hatch hen

This stag is a Stewart Yellow Leg Hatch cock x Cardinal Club Kelso hen
(he is my pride and joy)

Those are some great looking roosters!  My cousin used to be into game birds and my grandfather always had birds around like that but I do not think he did much with them.

There was also a man down the road from us many many years ago that raised them like wildfire, his entire front yard was full of pens and he had some mighty fine specimens as well!

Those speckled ones have good noses.  They are the ones that track down the food, even stuff as small as ticks.   Wink

Chicken broke has more than one meaning around these parts.

Josh, have them stags turned yet?  Were they single mated the first one looks toe marked "double left" from the pic.

And on the second one ...hatch x kelso, hatch over kelso hen right?  Reason I asked I was taught to always use "speed over power " like kelso over hatch, keep the gamer blooded power blood on the hen side. Just curious.  I liked some hatch x butchers but always put the butcher over my good game hatch hens.

Just thoughts ...

Bryant,

The "1" turned very early. I actually got rid of my grown rooster when he turned because I wanted the stags running loose, and I knew the stags came from much better stock. I had 11 stags out of 25 straight run chicks that I had flown in. I just like to keep a rooster and 6-8 hens around the kennels. I shipped several quality hens in from around the country. I hatched a pile, but gave the chicks i had hatched away once I started thinking about it. I kept culling down until I was left with these 2. I only kept the #3 because I feared something may get the # 1. We have many critters around here. I kept a total of 6 hens/pullets.

Here is a CC kelso off of the gentleman's farm. He uses them pure and crossed. As for crosses, he is a 3rd generation cocker, and keeps nice fowl. I trust what he is doing, as he personally uses them throughout the year.
